2.7l Dyno results

Truck has just over 30,000 mi.

 

I wonder why the torque you got is so much lower than the manufacturer spec (which I remember to be around 180-190 lb/ft) while hp has not dropped much from the spec. 159 hp.

 

Rated 159 HP/180 TQ so each metric lost about 20 units through the drivetrain. Are you sure you arent looking at the numbers backwards?

 

thats not too bad and drivetrain losses and a few other things make a difference in the hp ratings

 

I may have, I've looked at this post on my blackberry this afternoon, guess I replied too fast. both HP and TQ losses are below 15% so that seem's normal. about 13% loss in TQ, this is actually pretty good.

 

well, with some mods that could always change right? i mean yeah power is lost throuh the drive train but still. it could make some of a difference?

and did they make two different runs or something?

 

Yep, there were 2 pulls. Blue is the first, Red is the second. The second run started about 300 RPM lower.

141whp and 157ft-lbs to the wheels is actually impressive compared to the manufacturers numbers.

Im curious what someone might see with a header, catback and an intake!

It's a very old post (2009) and the pic he took has long been deleted. Interesting thread though.

 

Just resurrecting an old post. The 2.7 is a slug at low RPM. Especially at 7000 feet. Once it gets above 4000 RPM it wakes up quite a bit but most of us don't ever rev them that high routinely. Still no powerhouse but it's very noticeable once the revs get above 4000 RPM. That is probably the reason so many get 300,000+ miles out of these 2.7's. When used for everyday driving and not revved pulling their GCVW every day they last for a long, long time. I'd bet that if one was to use the 2.7 the way it was designed, for example, towing it's gross GCVW regularly we'd see them worn out at 200,000 if that. Not just the engine but the whole truck. Anyone that has REALLY used their 2.7 at the max regularly can post and prove me wrong. I'd like to know how long these 2.7's as well as the truck as a whole really last when worked all week long at high RPM's towing loads. Every week. All year long year after year at their GCVW or close to it.
Don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to start an argument. I own a 2004 RC 4X4 and love it. I'm just wondering how durable these trucks are in real world working conditions when loaded all the way up and actually used for their intended purpose.

 

Good luck with that. Finding someone that uses the truck that way is like finding a needle in a hay stack. It's not a commercial use vehicle. It would be a tough argument to dispute the reliability of the 2.7 Tacoma no matter how it was used.

 

I suspect you're right but I'd bet there are a few out there who actually use them hard as work trucks. I was just "fishing" to see if there was anyone like that on the forum. I highly doubt there would be so many with 250,000+ on them if people actually worked them hard regularly.

 

You could say that about any vehicle...

 

Anyone who would push a vehicle to 100% (or close to it) on a regular basis will probably buy something with a higher rating so they don't have to constantly wring the shit out of it... assuming they want something that will last.

E.g. When hauling or towing any considerable load, many V8 trucks will get better fuel economy than our 4-cylinders because they just aren't working as hard. But driven normally on the street, or light loads, our 4-cylinders do really well.

 

I think you are right. I am one of those that always buys "more than I need". I wouldn't buy something and then use it to it's maximum capacity. It's cheaper in the long run to buy more than you need. I was just fishing as I said in a previous post. If I ever did have to tow with my taco I wouldn't tow more than 2500lbs even though it's rated at 3500. I also wouldn't do it regularly. If I was ever forced into a situation to tow 3500 lbs I would but that isn;t going to happen and if by some chance it did? It wouldn't be more than a twice in a lifetime event and it sure wouldn't be very far.

 

I pull 2300lbs every day at 6500-8000ft. Truck is still holding strong and motor is great still. Never had a problem and just changed my plugs tonight and look amazing my drive ranges from 40 miles to 100 miles a day

 

Cool! I knew some of you guy's were out there. How many miles on the truck? I'm assuming it is a 3RZ?
