Damn, that's messed up. @tcBob I would guess between 40 and 50 MPH. Had replaced brakes, rotors, and bled the system a few weeks prior.

Sad thing is I started researching this after the incident and this is a lot more common than I thought. Seems like once a month in SoCal based on the news links I found, I don't think mine made the news. Credit to my truck is I was able to drive it off the freeway and right into the parking lot of Caliber Collision which is an approved shop by my insurance(USAA).

Did the ABS even allow for skid marks on the roadway to demonstrate you did all you could?

A friend of mine several years back hit a guy standing in the freeway as well, it may have been the 5 too now that I think about it. He didn't survive and she was pretty messed up about it for awhile. They had determined that the guy was suicidal.

    Glad you're okay OP

CHP report stated that there were marks on the road leading to my truck. I was on the brakes real hard.

    from the police report

cc and aa are the start of the marks that CHP identified
dd and bb are the end of the marks

You and me both, my assumption is getting hit on the freeway = death.

There are a lot of mentally ill people on the streets. We see them in the jail all of the time. Sad.

I don't think it is anything to do with softness of the sheet metal. I think it has more to do with pedestrian safety design mandates such as minimum air gaps between sheet metal (like hoods) and underlying hard points such as engines, wiper motors, etc. Basically creating a crumple zone for the pedestrians head.

Is jaywalking not a crime in Canada or Maine?

Do they really expect someone to stop from 65 on a highway for a pedestrian, who doesn't belong there in the first place? City streets I can (somewhat) understand. But a highway?

Over just the course of a few years in San Antonio, TX I saw multiple people crossing 65 mph highways, usually within 1/4 mile of an underpass. Sometimes they even appeared to have climbed a fence to cross. heck, one time on the way to work on my motorcycle I nearly ran over a recently dead lady who had just been hit.

Crazy messed up world we live in. Sorry you got the short end of the stick. :-(

Yep. They can run or bike out across a crosswalk out of nowhere with people already half-way into the intersection; still your fault.

I know it's a fine for J-walking SoCalSteve. But even if someone is crossing in the middle of nowhere without a crosswalk, chances are high it's still the driver's fault. Stupid.

Man, I work at UMaine, jaywalking isn't in the vocabulary here. Look at the sky, or your phone, never look both ways before crossing, a 3 ton van can stop from 30 mph in 2 inches, don't worry.

    It's nuts

Yea, people are really frickin dumb. You would think for their own interest they would avoid doing stuff like this. I was getting on the highway the other night, dark out, and as I started accelerating around the corner of the exit and what shows up in my headlights? A pack of dumb ass teen to 20 something years olds on BMX bikes in the middle of the frickin ramp, right behind the corner! All of them were wearing dark cloths and not a single bike had a reflector on them. I nearly mowed all of them down. Like seriously, who rides their bike on highway ramp, at night, zero visibility gear, immediately around a corner? You can bet I dropped my window and screamed, "WHAT THE F*** ARE YOU IDIOTS DOING!!" I swear the IQ in the town around my school is at least 20 to 30 points lower than other nearby areas. People drive like crap here too. They blow lights and pull out without looking or remotely caring all the time. It's crazy I have to be on my toes when getting off the highway on the way to class. It extra sucks cuz MI is a no fault state so if someone in their rusted piece of shit 90's Chevy doesn't feel like braking and slams into you and doesn't have insurance, (which here chances are they don't) their still not at fault.
