More likely just reset the ECU transmission memory. That has been the typical procedure we have seen here after AT complaints.

I guess I cant be sure, but I don't think so. The service manager reset my ECU when I came in the second time. And he explicitly said ECM (which I only remembered because I though he misspoke)...they reprogrammed gears 3-4.

But like I said, it's still in the shop so I am just going with the information I've been given. This service manager seems squared away and he's being extraordinarily proactive and helpful. I don't have any reason not to trust him at this point.

There is a TSB for 3rd and 4th gear but only for the 4cylinder AT and that came out in September of 2015

This is the one you are talking about and it's for shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear.

Only thing I don't understand is since my truck was built in February 2016, this TSB should have been completed on my truck and the sticker that they mention at the bottom of the TSB should have been placed under my hood correct? But there is nothing there about it.

I also cannot find this TSB anywhere on NHTSB or Toyota's websites.

Thank you very much I love these forums. I went to the dealer less than a week after talking delivery of my 2016 Tacoma SR and brought up the shift between 2nd and 3rd the shop foreman gave me a big explanation about why it is doing this and it is normal. I am going back to him and show him this normal paper called a tsb. Wtf

Glad I could help. Just make sure your VIN matches one of the three listed in the TSB or they'll tell you to get bent.

Others have used the scan gauge in the past to check their fluid level .
Personally , I prefer to use the check fluid process because it guarantees all necessary parameters are met and fills any voids in the transmission fluid circuit with oil .
Just using the scan guage may give you a different fluid level . I suppose you could try the scan guage and then try the TEMP mode procedure to see the difference or if there is a difference

Just picked up mine from the shop.

Level was a little low (less than a quart). The tech reset transmission memory and checked the U-Joints for ample grease. All is good now!

We'll see how she drives after work and in the morning when it's cool out and the fluid is cold.

This morning, after the truck sat overnight, at an ambient 50 degrees outside, I still got the delay into drive from R and N. However - I do feel that shifting is smoother in the 20 miles I've driven since the dealer topped the fluid off. I'm going to drive it tonight after work in varying conditions to see how it shifts & to help the trans start to 'learn' again.

People need to realize that the delay going into drive is normal. Just wait 2 seconds before releasing the brake after going into drive. Adding the ATF is only going to improve shifting and smoothness.

I figured that was probably the case.

I always shift slowly into D from R, and always wait for full engagement into D or R before releasing the brake and applying gas anyways. I also never shift into a gear in the opposite direction of travel before coming to a complete stop. I think all of these practices will help keep any automatic trans in good working order for many miles and years of service.

So, that being said, the delay doesn't bother me at all. Just wanted to see as if it was a symptom of low fluid, or just a characteristic of the auto trans itself.

... Does half a quart really make a difference in transmission performance?

For the record my truck was a full quart low, and after topping it off it seems better (with emphasis on 'seems')
I think we need to be objective. Been low in fluid isn't recommended, but is this transmission that sensitive to fluid level???

I was anywhere between a half and a full quart low. In all honesty, I think there's a good chance that towards a quart low, you'll be able to feel a difference in performance.

Most likely because this only applies to trucks made before Sept 15, 2015, anything made after has the new ECU software and doesn't need the TSB

Sorry , I skimmed thru a lot of posts but did not see the answer to my question . I watched them check my trans for the PDI. The truck had 4 miles on it and was cold. They hooked up the laptop and brought it up to temp . Then opened the plug and a little trans fluid came out . I thought all was good. I have not noticed any probs in the first 70 miles.
I do not know if they pinned the trans cooler thermostat open . It most likely never had got up to temp to open it in the first 4 mlies . I see the manual says there is only 6 oz. different between the capacity of the trans with and with out the trans cooler .
I assume this 6 ozs. (.2 qts.) is draining and refill .
Anyone know what the real capacity of the whole trans cooler system holds ?
Could I still be low on fluid because once the thermostat opened up for the first time , a recheck would show the trans level low ?
I wish I had asked at the time . My dealer arranged for me to be there for the PDI . There were 3 guys working on the truck and I was watching so much at once I forgot about the pinning till I got home .
Sorry if this was all discussed already .
Truck built04-16-2016 in Mex. Dealer told me the low oil problem was fixed in Jan.
