I know that but when your stuck. You do what you have to. the gear will pull the fork and force it to engage. Or back to my further comment don't put yourself in a situation where your gonna fuck yourself.

I don't have a diff lock and yes. When I bought it I engaged 4x4 to make sure it worked and 4 high engaged while moving and 4low engaged while stopped in neutral everything works I just don't think I'm doing it correctly

Nahh...if you get stuck in 2hi, you can switch to 4hi. If you get stuck in 4hi...you can only pray that 4lo will get you out, but you'll probably have to get pulled out.

If you got it used, I would check all fluids and replace everything. You don't know when it was done last. At a minimum, I would change oil, grease the driveline, check transmission fluid, and change diff fluids. All can be done in your driveway with minimal tools for under $150 and a little elbow grease.

I've had this same issue with my 14 sport. Ive found that 4wd engages almost instantly if I use this procedure:
    Shift into neutral
    Engage 4wd
Shift unto drive, 4wd should engage

Give this a try and let us know if it works for you

This should do it! For manual cars just slip the clutch ever slow slightly to achieve the same effect. Try in 1st then again in reverse, 4WD should engage.

From my understanding it had to do with how the splines are aligned when you switch to 4x4.
You have a shafts and a sliding sleeve. Both of which are splined. If they are not aligned, then one of the 2 needs to turn. This is why the truck needs to "move". It will turn the drive shaft or axle shaft. And this will cause the 2 to align.

Typically there is enough drive live slack and alignment can occur with out physical forward or rearward motion of the truck.

Again, I'm not an expert nor claim to know exactly how the A.D.D. (automatic disconnecting differential)
works. But this seems to makes the most since to me ad to why it happens.

Maybe someone that does know will explain it. Until then I'm satisfied it's a normal condition.

You see, there is a clutch hub and shift fork along with some splined shafts that have to align when you shift into 4wd, these have to align for the collar to slide over completely so you should be moving a bit for this to happen, unless you happened to be stopped when they are directly aligned which is not likely

shift fork on the ADD actuator, moves right to left depending on selection of 2 or 4wd.

    Clutch sleeve in 4wd
    100_0931_294a31bf291e9b37f1a50ccf4f3203444ff5a114.jpg

Inside the differential you have a side gear inter-shaft where it engages with the clutch sleeve
    DBFDD70A-7E61-4120-BC8C-37E4E8763822_zps_84142743d6afdb9de070c8d52fa73fe1bb07a1c2.jpg

Inside the other side of the diff tube you can see where the clutch sleeve will slide over to engage the side gear in 4wd (don't mind the broken piece in my picture I'm holding). As you can see the gears on the clutch sleeve and side gear must align to be in 4wd
    E6049F0C-8D0C-4E8F-8927-7BEDDE524047_zps_87f0216a17780eb92c6b58d2a853f009de468c84.jpg

There is a similar style shift system in the transfer case to shift into 4wd. Both of these procedures must be successful in order to shift into 4wd and have the 4x4 light on solid. If you are stopped or there is driveline stress on the gears it makes it hard for these gears to align, therefore its best to do it in neutral while moving slowly.

I do it to mine all the time. I turn off the trac and drive until I'm nearly (or actually) stuck. Wait until you need to get 4 lo when stuck...that'll make you crazy! If it won't go in, let 10 - 15 pounds of air out of your tires. I was driving in 2wd open diffs in pretty deep spring snow the other day at 15 psi.
