I'm offering this fresh set of customized headlights for 3rd gen Tacomas for the cost of parts. It consists of used OEM assemblies ($600) I purchased on eBay plus brand-new, top-quality components ($400) purchased from The Retrofit Source. I worked on these lights over several weeks to figure out the retrofit process and test fit different components. Now that I've got the process/configuration down, I want to retrofit and re-install the brand new lights that came with my truck - so this set is up for grabs.

Here is a list of the major modifications:
1. Morimoto Stage III Mini H1 7.0 HID kit (4500K/35W) in the highbeam location
2. Morimoto XSB 2.0 Switchback LED strip in place of the stock DRLs
3. Chrome parts painted satin black (turn signal bowl painted gloss black)
4. Stock projector tilted up and loaded with stock H9 bulb to serve as supplemental highbeams
5. Tinted side marker lens
6. Temporarily sealed with foam weatherstripping so you can easily open the lenses and make additional modifications (e.g., LED halos, rhinestones, whatever you want). I can semi-permanently seal the housings using TRS Retrorubber (Butyl rubber) at no cost before shipping if you prefer.

Some considerations:
1. Between the fact that these assemblies likely came off totaled trucks and the difficult process to remove the lenses, at least half of the mounting tabs have required repairs by either the eBay vendor or myself using the appropriate plastic welding technique (literally melting and re-bonding the cracked/separated pieces). I also converted the lower-inner tab on the drivers side from snap-in to bolt-on because part of the snap was missing when I received it. At the end of the day, all tabs work as they should, provide strong support and are invisible with the hood down.






2. The lenses have light/normal road wear.
3. Allow up to 4-6 weeks. I won't begin retrofitting my original lights until I have a buyer for these, and I need to get that process done before swapping these out. Turn around will likely be quicker if I can get a buyer in the next couple days.

Nope. This will be the one and only set I'll offer for sale. This would be a full-weekend project, even if I was a pro. I can barely get away spending that much time on my own truck (even spread out over weeks), much less someone else's. If I actually charged for the time I put into these, they would cost 3x.

Buy these, make your money back selling your stock lights on eBay. You'll have custom lights with no down time, no melted lenses, basically for free.

 

As far as electronics go, you just need to tap the turn signal wire if you want the DRLs to blink. The HID components are very much plug and play. I plan to realign the right-side projector to minimize or eliminate the need to shim any brackets.

 

To get amber, you need to send power to that wire - if you want it to blink the power source needs to be the turn signal. I have it all wired up using the stock DRL connections. I will include a "quick splice" connector for you to snap onto the blinker wire, then you just plug another wire into that connector. I'll take pictures of all that when I pull the lights out.

To swap the lights, you need to get to a bolt under the top/outer corners of the bumper. Once you get to that bolt, it's pretty easy to take the whole bumper cover off. The grill needs to come off too but that's trivial. The whole swap should take less than a couple hours.

Is it very difficult to swap the LED strip to get the amber switchback?

 

It was a bit of a pain. You have to file down some parts of the clear plastic refractor (I used a dremel) to route the strip. Also, there are no good surfaces to which to adhere the LED strips, so I wedged them in place using clear 1/4" vinyl tubing. It's very hard to describe and I didn't take any pics, but you should have a better idea if you open up a pair and look.

I originally put some $20 silicon tube strips in there which were fine for white DRLs, but the amber was pathetic in broad daylight. I ended up using 24" Morimoto XSB strips and folding them in half - turned out great.

I stashed all the Morimoto wiring in the housing and was able to splice everything into the stock DRL wires for a clean install.

 

Ugh sounds rough. I'd be content with the DRL's just cutting off or blinking with the turn signals.

 

Either should work. For DRLs only, we'd still need a simple adapter and maybe a resistor to make it purely plug and play for you. I'll test it out tomorrow.

For the switchbacks, I think all we need is a more advanced set of adapters. I would suggest ordering the actual bulbs as well so I can test their operation.

 

For those who actually read the entire original post: I have realigned the driver-side projector so that shimming the bracket is no longer necessary (and edited the original post). These are ready to drop in and go.

 

I did a couple quick tests this morning and it turns out the Morimoto XSBs are smart enough they don't need any resistors regardless what's in the stock turn signal (halogen, LED, nothing).

Bottom line: All we need is this ($8) for a 100% plug-and-play set up for any configuration. I'll throw it in free if purchased today (I'd like to start retrofitting my stock assemblies tomorrow).

 

Is there a way to make the led headlights work on the SR5's?

 

You'll just need to tap an accessory power source, probably in fuse box. I'll figure out how to make sure it works and wire it up to be as plug-and-play as possible if you purchase the lights.

 

Im actually interested on the stock headlights so if someone buys yours...

 

I am interested if you can make them totally plug and play. So I'd just basically be swapping out my stock lights for yours. If you want to PM me we can discuss details as I'd be interested in some mods to the rear lights on my 2016 Limited model also, and you seem like you have all of the knowledge to get it done. I noticed damage/repair to the mounting tabs in one of the pics. Are the headlight assemblies prone to breakage when you remove or install them, or were those units salvaged or something?
