I would check just in case, when truck is use and everything is lubricated in 4wd it should engage while stopped, unless there is some crazy binding inside.
Maybe there is not enough oil and splines are dry. Remember this is getting engaged because a small spring pushing components together, so there is no crazy force there, hence why it needs to be lubed or moving to engage.

 

Based on the detailed write up and pictures recently posted, this is incorrect. If the splines aren't aligned directly, no amount of force will force them together, hence the need to occasionally put torque on the drivetrain. Like the OP originally questioned.

 

I just put it in neutral and turned the switch and as soon as I put it In drive the light went solid. I think it engages in neutral and dosent show it until u put it in drive

 

Thats why I wrote "unless there is some crazy binding inside" . That gets solved when you shift from D to R or R to D. Shift lock process can be done with fingers if system is lubricated, if its not than you are in trouble.
I use 4wd very often and my oil level is correct so system shifts standing or driving with out issue.

 

How much dose it cost to get it changed

To take the old fluid out and put fresh fluid in?

If you doing yourself its probably less than $20 for fluid. I would check front and read diffs as well.

 

Do you think it's something that actually needs to be changed cause the guy I bought this truck from said he never used the 4x4 I was the first one to use it that's why the first time I tested it I took a little longer to engage cause the transfer case it new now it works great cause I use it a lot

 

yeah even if you don't use it, oil gets grinder because transmission spins. So more important to change it and make sure level is full.
And yeah replace all oil levels in all (front/rear diff, transfer case )

~75% of the time mine will engage or disengage at a stand still. Sometimes it takes some slight motion either forwards or rearwards.

 

Go to neutral and it will usually engage. Then to D.

And try to engage 4x4 before you need it.
