I am new to off roading and I'm in an 07 Tacoma prerunner. I wanted to replace the stock air intake with a K&N cai. However, I was concerned if there would be any compromise in its performance of resisting dust and water splash on and off road? Anything will help. Thanks

I wanted to ask a similar question? Where is this Airbox? I know it's under the hood but where?

I don't think I've seen or heard of any Tacoma owners have trouble with their CAI taking in water or dust. What are you looking to get out of installing a CAI? From my experience in having one on my last car, it did nothing for performance or MPG (if anything it actually made it a little worse), it did sound kinda cool though. It was an Injen brand CAI, not K&N. It wasn't worth the money looking back on it...if I were to do it again I would've saved up for a better exhaust system

I was mainly looking for just an added style boost but I'm also not interested in lowering my mpg

More air = more fuel consumed.

Also take puddles slowly, it can splash the filter.

Stick with stock. There is no performance gain and an open style intake like the K&N is a liability offroad. It'll get wet and introduce muddy water into the intake. The stock intake won't.

Also, if you would go with a k&n, its just going to make the engine noise louder every time you accelerate hard. So you'll be mashing the gas all the time just to hear it, which will in turn, ruin your mpg.

    :)

There are sealed box intakes that will still give you that scream on acceleration and be protected offroad. Those include: AFE Power stage 2, and TRD intake

Colder air is better for performance, but better performance = worse MPG (typically). Not to mention, a K&N "cold air" intake isn't really pulling in cold air...I mean it's located in the same place inside your engine bay as your stock air intake, how is the air any colder? A true cold air intake would be like a snorkel, pulling in air from outside the vehicle. But those also come with drawbacks, namely dust

I recommend just sticking with your stock air intake system, if anything get one of those K&N filters that drops into your stock air intake box...but even those can be problematic with the oils they use.

I have the K&N CAI and it doesnt really help on gas one way or another, i may got .5 mpg better also no hp gained at least with hp lost over 10 years, you are back to stock hp. Really its mainly for better sound. I love mine.

To answer the question about offroading it works good and haven't had any problem with mine also water isnt a problem unless you go fast through big puddles.

There is a true cold air intake for tacomas, but its even more exposed to the elements than a k&n would be.

Its made by URD. Its the URD TCAI (true cold air intake)

Oooooh I saw a member on here that had one of those, interesting. I remember seeing it and my first thought was, how in the heck does the engine not stall out during heavy rain?? He commented that he didn't know, only that it hadn't happened yet lol.

They make a waterproof sock for their filter but that just seems like a bad idea in heavy rain to me

    Am I doing this right?
I have the K&N CAI. Like said above, all it really did was make a purdy sound when I mash the go pedal.
But I'm taking it off real soon for future snorkel plans. Selling it for cheap if anyone is interested.
