Would it be ok to leave a 3 gallon gas can (full of gas, metal or plastic ) in the truck bed with a bed cover on it (bak F1 fiberglass cover)?

I don't see why not - the newer gas cans are sealed so they don't vent gas fumes as much as the old ones.

It get kind of hot when it's parked in direct sun in the bed since the cover is black.

Regardless of how hot it gets in the topper, gas won't self ignite. Well, it will have autoignition around 475*F but if it gets that hot in there you will have other issues.

I have one in my bed a lot of the time with ~5 gallons in it under my tri fold cover...never any issues.

Bed covers are not air tight, so the bed of you truck will vent any fumes. I have a fiberglass tonneau cover and keep 2--5 gallon--jerry cans in my bed. As long as your gas can is vented to allow for pressure equalization, and doesn't allow gas to slosh out when you're on rough roads, you shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks for the reminder, I just filled my gas container a few days ago and was tempted to be lazy and just fill it in the bed, but was thinking about the possibility of a static discharge, so I took the time and placed it on the ground to fill it up.

Please don't do what this person did at a gas station, the link is here:

I think I'd touch it to the ground before I poured gas out too but, that's just me.

I wouldn't recommend it as it could be a flying firebomb in an accident.
