Hey everybody I'm new on here been using the forum for research but finally signed up, any ways so I've got a few issues to deal with, first off my truck is 97 with a 98 motor in it with aprox 180,xxx miles, I need to redo my clutch, it squeals taking off sometimes and feels like it's in need of some help, secondly I have a check eng light for random misfire cylinder 1 I have done plugs and wires, cylinder 1 injector, pulled intake manifold off and cleaned out all the sludge, cleaned MAF sensor, almost runs worse now lol also I have the cracks in my exaust manifold, any help or experience with any of these would be great, I am very mechanical I am a refrigerated trailer technician, I'm just not that familiar with tacomas, only had the truck about a year

Do not replace the manifold with another cast one....get the oem mini or get a true header. Wasting time and monies with the cast junkers!

Ya I've found an aftermarket fix I just haven't spent the money on it yet, I'm a bit of a motorcycle junkie and tend to blow money on it before the truck, even though I commute in my truck but hey that would make too much sense to keep it going right lol I may end up selling my truck I'm tired of not having power my bike literally has more horsepower, I would like at least a v6 but I'm not sure what else I would get

I agree! I even got mine from yota of dallas too!

Like I mentioned above, i currently have both. The mini and an LCE. The LCE is nice but headers dont do what they used to back in the day when you got 15hp with a header swap. It helps with usable torque a lil bit but nothing major. Cant remember what i payed for the LCE but it wasnt cheap. If i were to do it all over again id prolly just go with the mini, spray it with that good quality VHT paint and call it a day. That paint holds up well on exhaust components. Mine still looks like it did on day one and its been a couple three years. Its like a ceramic type of paint too so its posed to help with heat.

Did you do the slave cyclinder too, a guy at work said I should do it too, it's only 22.00 dollars so I might as well I'm looking at 200$ dollars for everything

I did not replace the clutch slave cylinder. It works just like it did before the change.

Ok so my last big issue is still the check engine light.it was throwing a code for random misfire in cylinder one, I have since then replaced plugs, wires,# 1 injector, fuel filter and cleaned my slugded up intake manifold all the way to the valves. Cleared the code and it came back in a day, I ordered a new pcv valve but it was the wrong one so I still have that to do but and check valve clearance. Any other ideas or been in this situation with this motor

I was in basically the same spot with my 2000 2.7L. I did a compression check and leak down test, which showed a problem between #2&#3 cylinders. I was having problems on #1 cylinder misfire (scanner was showing random misfire #1 I don't remember the exact code) that started me down this path. After the compression check/leak down test, I went ahead and yanked the motor. I decided that if I was going to replace the cylinder head (local engine shop diagnosed the crack on exhaust side), I would just replace the timing system at the same time and felt it was easier to pull the motor (since I wanted to change the clutch) than drop the front end to allow the oil pan to clear. After I had the motor out, I decided to do a full rebuild (had 197k miles on it already). That was a long road, given my work schedule, and took almost a year for me to get her running again. She is running great now and has more power than before.

My best advice, and I am no expert, is to do a compression check. If you don't show consistent compression across all cylinders, add a little oil through the spark plug hole and run it again to see if your rings are bad; following those results, I would begin considering a leak down test to see if a head job/head gasket is needed. I definitely could have just swapped the head with a new one, but needed to have the block re-decked anyway. I have a TON of pictures of my motor in various states of rebuild and will be doing a thread on it for others that may want to tackle that job. I have rebuilt exactly three motors (for passenger vehicles), so I am in no way an expert. Overall, it was an easy job. The hardest part is the room and time. Pulling the motor and tearing it down is actually very fast. It is machine work, waiting on parts, etc. that takes a while. Plus, if you rush something you will likely end up regretting it. I know racers that can rebuild a motor in a weekend, but that is not a daily driver either. If your test results indicate a new HG or Cylinder head, and you don't want to change the timing chains, you can easily swap the head/gasket in your driveway over a weekend. The only special tools you will need is a torque wrench (1/2 drive is probably best) and a 12-point 14mm socket for the head bolts.

It sounds like you have the exact same issue that I had last year. Do the compression test. If it is low, you probably have burnt valves and will have to pull the head to take to a machine shop. Good luck!

Well I got around to doing a compression test and the results were about 165 across the board wich sounds descent to me and I've already changed my injector, plugs and wires so all there is left to change is coil pack and idle control valve, wich is kind of expensive . But after that hopefully the light will stay off and I can sell this thing lol
