This is my first Tacoma and have been reading and researching the Auto LSD function but still have a question. Have a 2016 sr5 v6 4x4 auto. When in 2wd I press the traction control button and trac off and auto LSD show up on instrument panel. When in 4wd high and press the botton only trac off shows up. I did not hold the button down but just touch it. I thought that we had a LSD in 4wd high. So this means open differential in 4wd. If this is the case I may be doing a lot of walking for asking to get pulled out a lot. Will be going down wet field roads on a daily basis.
The sale person also said it had LSD in 4wd.

    Thanks for the help!!

Unfortunately this is why you can't ever trust what a salesman tells you, in my experience they usually don't know anything about these trucks outside of the basic specs, and even then that's still not something I'd rely on them for exclusively.

If having a no-slip or limited slip differential is necessary for you on a daily basis, I'd really look into getting a selectable locking rear differential. Like mentioned above, ARB makes them and they are very reliable, even better than a limited slip. My understanding is that LSD's were designed more for everyday driving use, not so much for offroad use. A locker is a better bet for that.

TRAC brakes a slipping wheel in 4high, so you'll be fine.

Auto-LSD vs. TRAC is just Toyota marketing nonsense; both are effectively the same thing. And neither is anything special either; AFAIK every passenger vehicle currently sold in the U.S. has electronic brake-based traction control. Toyota is the only company that calls theirs a "LSD", a term other companies reserve for clutch-based mechanical/electromechanical units.

You only have truly open diffs if you turn off TRAC/Auto-LSD with the button.

In 4HI with TRAC do you get engine deactivation if you tires start to spin. This is all good to know before I get in the mud. Thanks for all of the help!

No. You can lay into the pedal and spin through things.

Yellow wire mod also gives you TRAC in 4lo rather than open diffs. Search for it and read up on it. I'm not sure if it's exactly the same in 3rd gens.

So in 4HI you have trac and no engine deactivation but in 2wd you would still have trac but engine deactivation. Press traction control button and in 2wd you have auto LSD???

Auto lsd is ONLY available in 2hi. TRAC OFF is auto lsd on all 4 tires in 4hi.

You can turn it all off by stopping and holding the Traction control button for a few seconds. But VSC will still take control if it senses something crazy. You can never completely turn off VSC, even though the book says it's turning off traction control and VSC.

4LO is open diffs on all models except for the OR unless you yellow wire

wait what? auto lsd is front and rear on 4hi when trac is off?

also, on the yellow wire mod does 4lo default to open diffs?

or is that for the 2016s?
