If it is a diff bearing causing the vibration, that probably won't make it past the warranty period. A bearing that isn't set right or has improper pre-load will start to howl and whine and become very noticeable.

This vibration seems different though, it seems to be RPM related which doesn't really point to a bearing which would be speed related. I did the neutral engine run up test (slowly) a couple more times and now I definitely feel something happen at 2000-2200 RPM (not as intense) but it is there for sure. It is a lower rumble vibration at about 2000 RPM and then the buzzing vibration around 2100 RPM. So there IS something engine component related being excited at that RPM.

However, I have a manual transmission so if I drive like a "bro" and gun it past 2400 RPM and drive with higher revs before changing gears (shift all gears around 3k), I don't notice the vibration as much. If I drive like a grandma and try to maximize fuel economy, I pretty much live in the vibration range. Hmmmm, maybe we all drive like grandmas and need to start racing our trucks from point A to point B

Well, on a side note, in another thread other people recently traded in for an F150 and only lost $1-2k on trading in. One guy I believe didn't lose anything. I'll be sticking with my Tacoma....for now.

The needle bearing problem on the 2nd gens is relative to certain speed, not rpm, as most drivetrain problems usually are. There is an entire thread about it.

The 2100-2500rpm vibration is likely an engine resonant frequency issue, and if so possible cures might be different engine/transmission mounts or harmonic balancer.

I'm sure its not an easy question to answer but I'll ask anyway. How prevalent is this issue. I ask because I'm thinking of buying one. I test drove one yesterday and didn't notice anything but I didn't know about it until I read this thread. I also didn't drive it very far. I'll have to ask for another test drive. Has anybody posted a thread with a poll on how many people suffer from this issue? I can wait till next year if I have to but was really hoping to buy now.

There probably won't be any changes for next year so your risk is probably the same. As for how prevalent the issue is, that is tough to say. Some people say all new tacomas they test drive have it, others say theirs doesn't have it. But it also has been known to show up after some miles were put on the truck.....

Had the appointment today. Forced them to let me ride with the the tech. He felt something in the shifter and steering wheel. Told him to take his boot off and he would feel the pedal but he would not. I have to go back to let the service manager drive. I do not see anything good coming from this. They need to start with maybe motor/trans mounts and drive shafits front and rear. Look at the Lexus board. Some of the sun are having the same. Could be the motor components like harmonic balancer. Loose input output shafts? U mm how much can we tell the dealer. Maybe try frame dampners they are using on diesels. Oh f..... we bought a wolf in sheets clothing. Sad part is I have a new bilsteins setting in boxes and the dealer told me to hold off until they finish or they can point fingers at them.

This sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen. I'm gonna have to seriously consider buying something else . Shame because it's a really nice truck

Just go drive one and decide for yourself. While I don't doubt that there are some trucks with the problem more so than others, in most it seems to be mild and not to bother owners. Mine it isn't really noticeable unless I concentrate hard. Even then it isn't that bad, more of just a change in the type of vibration and not really anything obnoxious like some are experiencing. Everyone has different tolerances for these sort of things though, and it does seem that some vehicles it is worse than others ...

This thread is spooking me...just sayin.

I wonder if I could be happy with a 4-banger Access Cab vs the TRD-OR I was thinking about?

I am planning to go manual and was hoping this buzz issue was isolated to the auto equipped trucks, but I guess not?

go test drive what you want and go from there. every truck is different and everyones tolerance is different.

    Good point laggz.

I was at the dealer today (Don McGill at I-10/Kirkwood) and they did not have a single Tacoma on the lot!

My salesman said if I wanted a TRD-OR manual in Quicksand I would have to order it. Guess I'd need to know I can refuse the truck at the lot if it has an issue.

Even if you gave a deposit if you change your mind they are required to return the deposit. They'll either sell the truck to someone else or trade it to another dealer for different inventory. Any other story they try to sell is bullshit. You aren't forced to buy something if it shows up and you don't like the way it drives.

Told him to take his boot off?

Is this really a problem if you have to take your boot off to feel it? The tech was probably thinking WTF!

Hell yea. He had freaking logging boots on. I feel it most with leather soled dress and cowboy boots. It is a problem. Just trying to get the dealer to feel and knowledge it.

Probably not pinion bearing preload related. If it was, several members wouldn't have made it 3k+ miles without the bearing starting to howl. I also wouldn't suspect it to be RPM related.

I truly am baffled that other members say they don't have it AT ALL since it seems to be a resonance frequency issue.

First I'm going to try to have the low speed <25 mph vibration/rumble fixed as that seems to be 100% driveline related. If Toyota won't admit to it, then I'll just bite the bullet and take it to a driveline shop and pay to have them diagnose it since I am convinced that is the issue.
