Thank ya. I been playing 20 years now. But my skills are completely gone since having 2 kids takes all my free time.

Any of you guys self taught that could point me in the right direction for good resources to learn a thing or two? I really just need the basics and go from there. Time to quit saying I've always wanted to learn and actually start learning.

Next up is a fender strat, which I have also wanted half of my life. Anyone know difference in American and Mexican made starts?

Learn to read tabs then learn some chords and basic songs.

tabs will take you 20 minutes to learn to read, here's a decent guide on it: http://www.justinguitar.com/en/BC-108-TABandBoxes.php

If you're more interested in learning to create you own songs then look into music theory. Learn some chord progressions and how they work.

Thanks for the tips. Maybe some day I might venture into my own music but really it's just for fun around a camp fire or with friends hanging out. Nothing too serious.

Tabs Tabs Tabs. Once you get the hang of it, you'll learn what naturally sounds right and what sounds terrible.

If you are looking for a practice amp, I would highly recommend a Blackstar (bunch of old Marshall engineers who left and started their own company). I've had an HT-5R 5 watt tube head for a couple years now and absolutely love it for a classic rock, crunchy tube tone. The 5 watt actually holds up with a drum set volume-wise. Looking back now I think I would have even gone for the 1 watt model for a purely bedroom practice amp. They are also incredibly affordable, I paid $300 CAD for mine.

Different electronics, different woods, different everything. They are the same guitar in shape alone. Having owned both mexican and american tele's and strats I would say don't bother with anything mexican from Fender. If cost is the issue, look into a used Highway One or American Standard Strat. Highway One is the entry level American model and is a very playable guitar.

That what I had though and why it's taken me a while to pull the trigger on one since American's are expensive. I've only played on Americans and love the sound.

Keep an eye on the classifieds and toss out the occasional low offer on an American. I've picked up used Highway One's and American Standard Strats both for $450 CAD before.

^I have them on my Ibanez & they have all around great tone. I've used EMG before & they're just OK.
