Are these issued of low ATF fluid and under-greased U-joints really causing problems? Or are people just being OCD about this shit?

I've got to assume that 90% of the people who buy a Tacoma don't worry about this... and it seems like they're fine. But, what do I know?

If they have low ATF fluid and dry u-joints they are only fine for now....

Problem with the folks who had improperly filled tranny fluid, now it might be filled but many of us drove thousands of miles on low fluid. No way to tell how detrimental this will be in the future for these trucks. Really sucks man. Imperative you get it checked before you drive it off lot, they need to check it physically following proper procedures for a sealed tranny which takes longer than just hooking it up to the computer system (techstream). Also I checked my differentials and they were low as well--as were other people on this forum. Same problem where we will not know how bad the long term affects will be. I'd dig into the Diff's and have them check the fluids there too before rolling off the lot. Ask them to let you physically watch them do the check. Do not take a dealers word for it as many have been caught lying just to get the truck out of their service bays. The problem here is that credibility of Toyota has been called into question due to their inconsistency in manufacturing and their pre-delivery inspections.

Really would just wait for 2017 but as years past have shown, Toyota doesn't always get it right on future releases. So now you still have to wonder will they be filled correctly on 2017s? Until I see Toyota step forward and come clean on this SNAFU, I will be hesitant. They SHOULD issue a recall notice for all dealers company-wide to have customers bring their trucks in and perform inspections on these vehicles. Then they should perform a root cause analysis to see where their process broke down on filling these things correctly, identifying full and open disclosure to impacted customers on how the process will be fixed in the future (earning back trust). Finally they should as a STANDARD for all those affected offer an extended warranty, 100k+ miles and 8 to 10 years at minimum. That would make it right IMO.

An overfilled transmission can also be a big no no. Just make sure the dealership checks to ensure it has the PROPER amount and you shouldn't have any issues regarding reliability. As for whether you like how it shifts or not, especially while using cruise control, that's a personal preference.

Did you have any symptoms that led you to check your tranny fluid?

Me? No, when I took possession of my ordered truck I was also going to have larger wheels and a roof rack installed so I checked the pre delivery inspection sheet to see if it was specified to check the transmission fluid due to having the tow package installed. They said it was NOT part of the inspection so I told them to do it regardless and add it to my bill for the additional work. I also told them I wanted to observe the procedure to ensure it was completed to my satisfaction.

I had taken the day off for delivery because I wanted to be present in case there were any issues with the wheel balancing, TPMS transfer, roof rack or the fluid checks. They said no problem and let me watch. Transmission was properly filled before being driven off the lot and I was satisfied with the process. No gripes at all about paying for a little extra work to be sure and they were content with providing a requested service to a satisfied customer.

That was 4k miles ago and no problems since buying the truck.

If you have the tow package I would recommend you get it checked. A good transmission with low fluid won't be good very long and as stated above, no idea on the long term effects if caught after a few thousand miles.

What's another $85 - $100 to have them do it. If anything, it would reinforce any warranty claims if something were to come up later and you'd have documentation the dealership checked it specifically for the proper amount.

That little investment is worth the peace of mind.....

or you can save money, read up and do the check yourself but then you don't have the documentation the dealership would provide.

IMO that's pure B/S! Paying them to do something that should be done at the factory, the distributor, or the dealer before you take delivery of your vehicle is ludicrous. I'm not saying you shouldn't have the checks done regardless but you should NOT have to pay for them. Evidently this a dealer by dealer decision to check the fluids as I took my '16 to a different dealership from which it was bought and they changed out the rear door window seal and checked the differential and transmission fluid at my request (no charge). The only inconvenience was having to leave it overnight (to let the transmission cool as per the tech's instructions).

Got mine in March, pretty much straight from the boat, made in Mexico 1/16. I really like the truck, I never really fell in love with any cars I had just my nature not a reflection on the cars cause I had some great ones, no issues to speak of. I use the cruise control and have not had the searching transmission problems with either it on or off. Fit and finish has be great and the interior is very comfortable, at least for me, my wife and those who have ridden in it. Enjoy your truck and don't worry, be mindful, but it is a machine and can be fixed if anything comes your way.

I guess I could have pressed the issue to get it for no charge but I really didn't give a fuck over an additional $85 to have it done right and not via tech stream. You want to make a point with your dealer, go right ahead.

You don't need to fight my battles.

OK but his point is that you set a poor precedent for other fellow customers. Don't feed the begging dog. Just like those who spend 5k over MSRP on a Tacoma in California.

    oh please.......

Everybody works their own deal on purchase and delivery, you want to ask for anything outside of a delivered service, work it into your own transaction to get it in the deal for free.

As for me there's nothing wrong with what I did, how they provided a service specifically as I asked as long as I'm satisfied with the outcome.

    Take your preaching elsewhere.
