Hi All, I am looking to upgrade from my 1st gen but here in northern CA 2nd gen prices are crazy over the top it is common to see trucks with 100K+ miles for 20 grand or much more. I was wanting to do a nice road trip this summer anyway and am interested to find the place in the states where our trucks are worth the least, fly out purchase a truck and make a vacation out of the return trip. So where in the states do people think Toyotas are weak and value larger trucks more IE farm land? the South?

I would stay away from the North or where road salt is used to avoid frame rust.

I've found great prices on Tacomas in Texas when I was looking for my current truck. Ended up buying one in West Virginia for a steal. Anywhere within a days drive from the west coast seems to be pretty high on the resale prices. If you're willing to give Texas/OK/Missouri a chance, I think you'll be surprised what deals you can find.

    Nor Cal perspective:

They are in very high demand and the cheapest ones are probably from areas where cars rust and you do not want one of those.

I searched and searched for several months and finally found exactly what I was looking for last year, a 4 cyl 4WD Access Cab with 130K and I paid $14.2k. It was 7 years old at the time (2008 bought in 2015). People were asking $18k-$20k for similar trucks and I even saw some similar mileage first gens for as much as $18k and several for $15k. Had to drive 3 hours to a sketchy little used car lot which is usually against my rules, but you have to do what you have to do. Be prepared to see your dream truck go up for sale on craigslist and be sold before you can get to it. To be successful in the used Tacoma market you need to have a fat wad of cash in hand, be scouring craigslist once an hour all day, and when you see your perfect truck pop up call and drive immediately to check it out and if it's legit you buy it then and there. Leave your car parked in front of the sellers house and come get it later if you have to. If you have to wait til the weekend or 6 hours til you get off work it will be gone. It's a cut throat sellers market.

Note this post applies to 4x4 models. it's not as bad for Prerunners and 5 luggers. Even double cab 4x4s are more plentiful than Access cab so it will vary depending on what you want.

I dont think you will be able to weasel around this bud. Sure you might find one 2-3 grand cheaper across the United States, which is nice, but after you factory how much time and money you spend retrieving it is it even worth it? I stayed local found the one I wanted and just bit the bullet. They hold there value so well I couldnt bring myself to spend that much on a used vehicle so i bought new.

Yeah that's one reason I bought mine, they hold their value stupidly!

I just bought a 2010 DCSB TRD 4x4 with 110k and gave just over $20k for it. The stealership was asking $25,900.00 for it. I figure I'm gonna roll it for 6 years before I retire and it'll have about 280-300k on it. I think if things stay the same market wise I should be able to deal it for $7 to $9k.

    Good luck with your search

    Too few to list.
From what I've seen lately, the prices of the 2nd gens have gone up. A DC TRD OR 4x4 auto only MSRP for around $34K-$35K brand new and looking at used ones, dealers are asking anywhere from $32K+ for ones that have anywhere around 10K to 40K miles from 2013-2015. That's about the same cost as buying one brand new.

If you want a brand new 2015, according to buyatoyota.com - the Gulf States Region (Texas Zip 78201 San Antonio) still have 4 2015's available. You might want to call dealerships around the San Antonio, TX area.

I hear ya. Been shopping one in southern California the past four months. It was hell. Finally found a great condition 2006 trd sport with 69k on it. DCLB silver. Paid $16,7. I'm a happy camper today.

good luck. And don't settle. I almost did many times.

I picked up a trd sport 08 in Dallas last year with under 20k miles for $17k and was happy with that. You just have to be patient and keep looking and something will turn up.

Did you check the ones for sale here in the B/S/T section. Also just read post #88238 on 2nd gen - what have you done to your tac-guy getting ready to sell.

    I've had 4 total. 2 88 LX and 2 89 GT's. They were all under $3K.
I bought my new 2015 DC PreRunner TRD OR for $28.5K with 3 miles. However, I did pay $32K for my 2015 DC 4x4 TRD OR and got $27K for my PreRunner with 13K miles.
