I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 v6 auto transmission truck is all stock when I accelerate it makes this really loud ticking noise that's very annoying but only under acceleration. And I'm not sure if it's a exhaust leak or header leak. Mpg is horrible also.

    Ticking or rattle?

Rattle is more like marbles in a can it it pinging. Try a higher octane gasoline.

I run 91 in it all the time. It's more of a rattle. Like somethings loose or a leak.

    Reserected from the dead.
Have you changed plugs or wires? Is there a chance you are arcing and are hearing the snap of the spark?

Maybe spray a mist of water around the plugs while engine is running. Works best if you do this at night. You can really see a spark if there is one.

Check your engine fan for signs of a bad bearing. It could be causing a parasitic drag on the engine. Maybe a bad fan clutch too.

I haven't changed any spark plugs or wires. And the fan clutch looks brand new.

But if it was the fan wouldn't that be heard even if your not accelerating?

Hmm... So I changed plugs this weekend and I swear I immediately heard a ticking noise. How would one fix an arc, if that's what is happening?

Just a thought.... had it happen once but I think it was an extreme case...

Injector? Usually when I have had them go south they tick annoyingly, but quietly. I recently had one bail (non toyota) and the thing sounded like a bad lifter, but only under load... also, mileage was shit due to the injector failure...

How did the injector fail exactly. I work in the injector business and there are very few failure modes:

    1. Stuck open leaking.
    2. Stuck closed not injecting.
    3. Open coil. not injecting.
    4. Shorted coil not injecting.

None of these will cause an injector to tick more than normal.

How would you diagnose injector failure

If it is leaking a lot, your engine will hydrolock.

If it is leaking a little your fuel rail pressure would leak down when sitting and that cylinder would give a puff of fuel smoke ( Black Smoke ) when started after sitting for hours. Other than that you may not notice anything.

If it is stuck closed or the injector coil is open or shorted you would have a noticeable skip where the cylinder isn't firing.

You can pull the connector off the injector and read the coil resistance with a meter. It should read very close to 12 Ohms across the terminals. Neither terminal should read any resistance to ground.

I honestly have no clue. I certainly don't profess to have more knowledge on them....
It was much louder than a regular light tick....it certainly wasn't a knock by any mean, but easily twice as loud as normal. It was a Mercedes V8, I think it was a Bosch injector??
either way...they changed it and all was groovy. :D

I didn't think it had to be...just sharing what seemed like a remote possibility that I had experienced. :)

I had pinging noise in my 2007 Base model, has a 2.7. Couldn't figure it out, had the engine analyzed; all systems were operating properly. Timing was advancing and retarding when it needed to. Then when I was changing my valve cover gasket, noticed by timing chained had a good bit of slack in it. Now I am not saying this is your problem, but, I replaced my timing chain, guides and tensioners, and the pinging is gone. Truck had 247,000 when i replaced the chain.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
05s and 06s were known for cracked exhaust manifolds, it happened to my last 06. There is a TSB and I had mine replaced. I was convinced that the dealer was wrong and it wasn't the manifolds, I was wrong. I heard no leaking at idle, I saw no signs of leakage, but somehow he knew. As soon as you pulled out under acceleration you could hear it. I thought that it was a lifter of maybe even a torque converter from the sound of it.

I suggest that you search for Tacoma cracked exhaust manifold TSB and see if the description sounds correct.
