Sub & Box Questions. Sundown SD-3 10"

What's the most airspace you can get behind the back seat in a 2007 double cab? I've got one of those prefab boxes with two Sundown SD-2 10's right now. But I'm planning to get a box made. The subs are both blown and my Amp is shot so while I'm updating and redoing I figure it wouldn't hurt to get a bigger amp and add a third 10'' sub if I can achieve enough airspace. I'm leaning hard towards the SD-3 10's. Has anybody installed these behind their back seat yet? And could I get enough air space in a box back there to effectively have three back there, and if so would four fit and still function??? EXCUSE MY MESS OF WIRES!! It's normally a lot cleaner but I was hunting down the problem that ended up being My amp that goes to the subs......

 

damn, are they hitting the seat backs during excursion? why didn't you set them back further?

 

I didn't realize I never pulled the plastic piece off the back of the seats until it was too late.....

Already pulled them off and will be pushing the back of the seat forwards about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch so that I won't have to worry about this this time around

 

The SD3 has an inverted surround as well - that should help with clearance. Hurts my face to see that though.

And I might suggest that the surrounds hitting the back of the seats affected output. Perhaps 2 is enough if they aren't physically inhibited.

 

Oh I guarantee that greatly effected their output. And I'm going to try two in my pre fab. But I want to know how many I can actually have. So I can buy an amp big enough so that if/when I get a custom box built I won't have to buy a new amp too

 

Well that's easy. Just measure the space back there, figure the volume and subtract for wood thickness and bracing. Then consider you need .61 cubes per driver (if you're using Sundown's recommendation). Some simple division from there will get you your answer.

 

I currently don't have the time to measure and what not that's why I was hoping somebody who's done a full box back there could just tell me. I'm hoping I have the time this weekend to pull it all out and install an SD-2 8" and an amp I have laying around. at the very least I want to get it pulled out.

 

Post some pics when you install the SD-8 and Amp... They'll look very familiar

 

The box for my single 10 behind the driver side rear seat has 0.65 cubic feet. At a glance, it looks like you could fit 3 side by side, so my guess would be that you could fit 3 10's in a proper box. The box is 17" wide so if there's at least 51" space back there then you're good

 

Your better off find 2 10s that require small ported boxes and just porting 2 10s.

 

I'm always down to look into something else. Have any suggestions?

So i actually called sundown to talk to them about their subs. The EV3 series subs are made for ported boxes (Per the guy at sundown). He said that they dont sound that good in a sealed box. He did recommend the SD3 series. ..

The SD3 series is good for sealed and ported boxes. The SD3 has the inverted surround so there in more excursion "in" rather than "out". The SD3 requires .4 square feet (ft^3) of air space for a sealed box and .5-.75^3 for a ported box.

The EV3 series requires more and likes ported boxes.... .5 for a sealed and 1 for a ported box.

Another think to consider is the mount depth... you may build a box that does not fit the subs...
Also the EV3 subs have air holes in the motor and require space at the rear of the sub to allow air to escape. The SD3 does NOT have any holes in the motor so you do not have to worry about that.

I think that with the SD3s you will be able to build a shorter bottom box that will allow more room for excursion and you can definatly get 3 in the back of your tacoma.

 

Since asking this question I've done more research and I think I am going to go with two SD3 12's in a sealed enclosure. oh and BTW you are compare 8" sd3 specs to 10" EV3 specs. the sd3 and EV3 require about the same airspace except that the ev3 needs space behind the magnet and the sd3 does not. I've personally heard the E series and they were never in consideration for my usage. they don't sound very good musically. they're more for somebody who just wants a good amount of bass cheap. The SA's on the other hand Put out a lot of bass AND sound decent. And then you've got the SD's they put out good sounding bass and are loud for their size and airspace requirements but don't compare bass wise to the SA's and the SA's don't compare musically to the SD's and the E's really don't compare to either IMO
