So I had a Toyota Rep that comes out once a month, check out my lag when I go from R to D and at first it would not duplicate, but we waited 30 mins and luckily it happened. He noticed the the RPMs jumped as soon as I went to D from R and then jumped down and then jumped again to move forward, giving that lag feeling. He told me a logic update for the gears is being worked on and should be out in 3-6 months if not sooner.

He thinks that it is a logic issue and the new logic update will hopefully fix the issue. He told me the logic update will be addressing the constant gear searching (probably not get rid of it completely due to EPA standards the truck has) and that it will be fixing the cruise control hill issue where it will go to 4th gear and stay there along with other things they have seen pop up.

They also flashed my ECU for free. Pretty excited about the logic update.

If true, that cruise control fix would be huge. My only complaint about my truck. Thanks for sharing.

It erases the long term memory of the learning part of the ECU. So basically the truck will have to re-learn your driving.

Since our trucks go in every 5k miles I could see them doing it at the trucks normal checkup. I dont think they will send a letter.

It will need to be a TSB so service writers see it

I've been so frustrated with Toyota's cruise control since 1998 that I've stopped using it all together. I've made two trips across the country and 3-4 trips a year from the Bay Area to Seattle in Toyotas and don't recall ever using it because I never liked the way it worked.

See below. Unless it's a high profile safety issue you will have to know the TSB and prompt the service dept about it, in some cases you'll need the PDF of the TSB to get it done (ask me how I know)

    Quite effing true!

He thinks? Toyota is investing time and resources in something that they "hope" will fix an issue that many are experiencing? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are trying to convey here? Did he tell you this after confirming that your transmission actually does have odd behavior? Was he not aware of this issue before riding with you? I'm so confused....

Thinking back on it. Haha! My brand new 2003 Tacoma TRD Xtracabs had a obnoxious dash rattle. Took it to the dealer several times and was turned away. It wasn't until I found the TSB on CustomTacos, printed it and took it to them. Even then I had to argue with them for 30 minutes to get the TSB done. Finally they relented and I set an appointment. TSB called for some 3M stopping to be placed in the dash to quite the rattle. Few months later it started up again so I printed the TSB, went and got the 3M stripping and decided to do it myself. Tore the dash apart and what do I find..? Latex gloves stuffed everywhere. Zero 3M stripping bit enough rubber gloves that I could have probably given proctology exams to every 3rd gen owner here.

Sorry, I rant. Take it for what it's worth and it's only word of mouth. Keep an eye on the TSB's and be prepared to have it ready to have the dealership perform the work. Then, verify.

Gotta Like that terminology of "logic update"
I think there are several thousand auto owners who would like to give him a logic update...

Lets hope he's high and was at a loss of words today...my truck is tits up bit I could use a little logic update down the road..
I still get the "hickemup" in high gears as well..

May this be true. While I love my truck, the funky transmission shifting, especially on cruise, is the only annoyance that decreases my overall enjoyment.

To be fair, my truck shifts better now that it has learned my habits, but I think it could be (significantly) better. I think the cruise issue is solvable, but the rest may be boxed in by regulations and mileage testing.

I'm just going to continue enjoying my truck and if it happens, Great!

I'm going to go out and speculate that this logic update is a change to the fuel maps as opposed to anything to do with shift points or the transmission. Unfortunately Toyota has locked down their ECU's so there isn't anything for the aftermarket to be able to tune the vehicle. Even Gadget was having issues sourcing parts for connectors in order to tune a FI 4.0 in the late gen 4R's and FJC's.

That said, Toyota has to be careful with their changes as they don't alter the fuel economy too much but still meet the customers need/complaint.

It's a standard map that covers all fuel grades, elevation changes, aftermarket intakes and exhausts. I would hold my breath on it being a noticeable change in vehicle behavior.

The update coming out that he knows is mainly for the searching for gears and the cruise control staying at 4th gear. The problem I have and many have it seems like, he feels like it is another logic issue. He is unsure if the fix they are working on now will address this or not. He said he is sending notes about today to Toyota. He hopes that the logic update will fix the gear lag from R to D.

Thats the thing their update has to pass EPA testing and any other government things. This is what takes so long for it to come out.

Wasn't there a transmission-related update after the 2nd gen debuted years ago? They will probably do the same thing with the 3rd gen.

Offensive stickers and stuff the wife doesn't know about.
Ditto from your #8 post. I won't be holding my breath, fifth gen will be out by the time they get it by the EPA's BS. I am about to take mine in for it's 10k service in the next few days and I'm sure they will say everything is fine and dandy! Also waiting to see what their response for my dog shit gas mileage is this time (14-16, 17 on a good day with a tailwind and me naked after a colon cleanse and a fast lol). And to the hecklers and the Capt'n Obviouses out there, yes not in ECT, stock rim/tyres package, using reg unleaded and all the obvious fixes that people give me every time I mention it. This time though I will make sure when the tech takes it for a "test drive" and get's 22-25mpg (magically) I will be with him to call him on his BS. Yes I know I got a truck and I'm not looking for prius mileage or anything but come on lemme at least get some good power or be in ECT mode and get that mileage. Really hope that Cruise control and the crappy tranny issues are fixed soon, that would make me happier at least and maybe even help with my mileage.

It likely means that there is some unintended path that the software follows under certain conditions rather than simply remapping or changing existing parameter settings. It isn't some made up or fluff CYA term, just that a combination of parameters that wasn't expected or accounted for exists in the real world that hadn't been tested. Pretty common once you start having sensors for everything and controls based on their output -- even in fairly established systems. All it takes is one unexpected combination that is only apparent in a very small window of environmental and mechanical conditions.
