I don't agree with your statement, "If it's rusted bad underneath then it's not worth anything other than parts". People with 2004 Tacoma's that have a perforation, will be eligible for a new frame till 2019, if their frame was sprayed.

The first thing I would do is call a Toyota dealership, with the vin# and asked if the frame was ever sprayed, because if it was your frame is warranted till 2019. I would also bring the Tacoma to someone and have it checked for perforations before buying.

True, my original quote was a bit harsh but personally I wouldn't want to buy a truck that I knew I'd have to go through the hassle of dealing with Toyota's replacement program, but that's just me. Then again, that right there could be a huge bargaining chip in trying to get him to lower the price...

I agree, I would also want to know for sure that if it did have a perforation, that Toyota would replace the frame before buying, because if they won't you basically have an undrivable paperweight.

Honestly, the only reason I did was because it was being sold through Toyota. If I had found a first gen with only 24k miles on it at some no-name, small car lot dealership I'd pass. Worrying about odometer fraud would be only one of my worries, lol. But buying it through Toyota got me a bumper to bumper warranty through that dealership backed by Toyota, and an optional extended one which I did get just in case I ran into anything. The truck obviously sat for long periods of time and that alone can have negative effects in some cases. At the end of the day, buying through Toyota offered me a little more peace of mind on it.

Obviously, there's risk involved and assumed by the buyer with any used vehicle.

There's a lot of rust under that black paint. I wouldn't pay 1000.00 for that truck

I wonder what type of undercoating they used on the frame. If it wasn't the self repairing wax type, it might be accelerating the corrosion under it, by retaining moisture against the frame.

Thanks for all the input. I really like the truck otherwise.so I may look into the warranty on the frame.

BE PATIENT! Your truck is out there. I looked at hundreds and hundreds of truck before I found mine. Make it a challenge to find the perfect truck for you. I missed some very good deals but I didn't let it discourage me. The key is perseverance. There are millions of Tacomas on the road and great deals come up regularly, they just sell very quickly, usually the first day. I just paid $10,300 for an '01 TRD 4x4 ext cab with less than 90,000 miles from the second owner who bought it with only 10,000 miles on it. Clean carfax. I am very happy. For what its worth, I would never buy from a dealer, unless it was a major dealer who took a truck on trade in for new vehicle.

I think ima pass on this one, and look at the next generation. Are there any common problems with these such as the frame rust problem with the others?

When frame is rusted that means other things might be rusted. There are a lot of tacoma out there with no rust. And still there's the problems that show up after replacing a frame.

That looks like a nice truck. Are you in VA? Crawl under that one and check for rust like on that 1st gen, but from the pics it looks great.

I like the V6, MT, and OR package. Factory Tow package too. All pluses.
