Fuel Filter on an '01 Taco V6 - got a rounded off nut

Morning all - newbie to the forum, but I wanted to say after perusing for a bit there is a great amount of info available.

I'm the original owner on an '01 Taco 4WD SR5 V6, 5 spd, extra cab in silver. 88k miles.

Changed all the diff's, transfer case, and tranny, and greased the driveline this past weekend, but when I went to tackle the fuel filter (previously changed at a dealer) the through nut on the fuel line out of the filter to the motor is rounded off, enough so that I am pretty confident I'll have to wrestle it off with a set of vice grips. I've since moved to the opposite corner of the state here in NE OR, so taking it back to the same dealer isn't an option.

So, my question - given that I'll presumably need to replace that rounded off nut on the fuel line, is the end of the fuel line "flared" out, preventing me from just sliding the rounded off nut/sliding the replacement on? Can I, I hate to say it, "gently" remove the end of the line where it is flared to slide the old one off/new one on?

I called the local dealer in SE Washington, and their solution was to have to change out the entire fuel line. Not interested in spending that kind of $$$, especially since I am already scheduled to take the rig to them for the timing belt next week (90k miles) and I know that is going to cost me plenty.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance

This is a good question and I can't think of what you can do. I wonder if you can cut that rounded off part, then run a flexible line with a new nut on the other end. But I don't think that will work, you may want to bump the thread tonight when there are more people on here to see if they can give a good answer.

    Welcome Mr Rogers...

How often do we need to replace the fuel filters? I have pretty much the same truck (123k miles) and I doubt the filter has been changed. I consistently get around 17 mpg which is a lot lower than my 2000 Tacoma and wonder if this could be the culprit.

    Welcome!

I would say... Cut off the rounded nut w/ pipe cutter just at the flange and install new nut and reflange. you shouldn't need to cut off much. Alternate would be try a U pull it or a flexi line.

This is different from company to company, but usually I hear It's every 30,000 miles. Some people say every 10-15 thousand miles or 50k miles.

You should be fine every 30,000 miles. I would highly suggest a filter change.

Would a fuel filter impact fuel economy? Other than a rounded off nut, is the replacement fairly straight forward?

I'm not sure on the fuel economy, to be honest with you.
I would be more concerned with clean fuel, and sometimes old filters can cause a lot of stress on a fuel pump.

It is straight forward, some use a nut, or some require a special tool. The special tool is like 5-8 bucks, they are plastic collars. The filters are located under the drivers side seat, next to the inside of the frame.

You will have some fuel poor on you and could get messy, but there should be a fuel pressure release in the engine compartment.

I would highly suggest getting a Haynes manual, I tried to find a good write up on here but I couldn't. This manaul will help you out a lot.

    Thanks all

I've got a Haynes, but to be honest I found a better write up on the customtaco's site (I found the link while searching these forums).

Assuming that nut hadn't of been rounded off, probably would have taken 10 minutes and two box wrenches (I think a 14mm and a 19mm) and a 10mm socket wrench. The filter was $26 through my local auto parts outfit...
