A fatkid build

It is sad to think I'm ready to move on from my Tacoma. I'm not really, it is a great trail sized truck. Trail is the only thing other then being built it has going for it. I need to be able to haul a 20' camper with the family riding along, not in another car. I need to be able to haul 4x8 plywood and sheet rock. The Tacoma, while a good fit for just me was not cutting it for the family. I had hopes of a 4door cab, that would be a ton of work and still have some hauling issues being a smaller chassis.

The solution presented it's self today. I had to jump fast because these things don't last a day on the lot. They took it in on trade right so I was able to pull it in for less then they sell for private party by about 2k. What is it? A 2006 4door Tundra.

I only plan a light build for this. My focus will turn back to my 2004 4runner. The Tundra will get a nice lift (donated from the Tacoma) via ADS coil overs. I'll just level it at this point. The 4runner will start to get all of the other goodies needed to make it more trail worthy.

So, just a recap on current 4runner mods.

Addicted front bumper with 9.5klbs warn winch
Addicted weld on sliders
4.56 gears with rear electronic locking diff
255/85r16 tires that might get changed to 34x10.5r17 at the end of this summer.

I would like to have as soon as possible, a rear bumper built. By me or someone else, I don't know yet. I need skids for this thing soon. I might need a real roof rack for the RTT also.

Way to feck myself right before Moab again.

You can talk to josh at rci offroad. If you buy them I can pick them up for you. I should be up near his shop this week some time. Even if it is not this week. I will be up at some point.

 

I'm a paycheck or truck sale away at this point. Skids can wait until after Moab though. I'm generally very cautious when picking lines so they take little abuse.

 

Corey at InSain Make sweet roof racks if you can get time with him. They are AL too to keep the weight down.

 

I have been looking around at the internets and it seems that most racks run over 1k. I'll ask @SilverGhost if he knows about what Insane charges for the racks they do and if they think they can get one out in the month before Moab.

 

It would depend if he has a production model or if he needs the runner. I would say even Corey would be around $1k for a full length rack.

Well, I was told by the wife that she like the 4runner better. So, the Tundra will be getting the bigger of the 2 builds. I'm still planning on a rear bumper for the 4runner but it is on the back-burner at this point.

So, on to the Tundra. My thoughts are still builds that focus around 33-34" tires. The wheeling I do, just doesn't need any more then that. So 1st on the list is lift and tires. I picked up a used set (less then 1k miles) of 255/85r16 ST Maxx, it is a set of 5 so I have a matching full-sized spare. I also picked up a Toytec Boss lift with the progressive add-a-leaf and 650lbs coils. To help with alignment and coil-over clearance some SPC control arms.



Out with the old, didn't get too many pics as I quickly ran out of time.

The height in the front is too low, compared to @lotsoftoys I'm about 1" lower. I'll adjust it up once I replace the steering rack this coming week.

 

What happened to the parts donated from the Tacoma?

 

Sold the Tacoma for more, I gave the guy the option because he had already seen the truck with the ADS stuff. I added the cost of new ADS to the asking price and he took it

Sad about the 4R, I was looking forward to seeing it built and on the trail more, but EAF Tundra works too.

 

Getting to do some prep for the coming mods. The battery terminals on any Toyota are fairly weak under high load conditions. I don't have a high load now, but should by the end of the summer in the form of a winch.

I like the MIL spec terminals for my applications, every one of my trucks/4runner have them installed. They are rated over 600 amps if I remember correctly. I decided this time to enlarge the factory ring terminals to fit the new terminal end. I just used a step drill and went to town.


Final install allows for more connections at the battery terminal and a cleaner look. I should be installing my switch-pro this next week some time. Not in a hurry because it might not power anything before Moab, depends on lighting showing up.


I saved my Anti-Dark from the Tacoma. It is a nice quick install job so I took care of that tonight.



I cleaned the old adhesive off and applied new 3M trim adhesive, easy enough.

 

I am also, the 4Runner is a better wheeling platform. The Tundra, really does suit the EAF life better though. I can bring about any camping gear I could want now. Once the Tundra gets bumpers she might change her mind. She likes the kitted out look because it scares all the other mothers out of the way in the line to the school. Scoobydooos don't want to try and battle the war-runner.

 

Those older tundras aren't a whole lot bigger than a 2nd Gen tacoma anyway are they?

I think I have heard they are only an inch wider. Not sure on that, my try and measure that out tomorrow. I do have a 6' bed so it is pretty long compared to your Tacoma.

 

The 2nd gens are 65" wms to wms. While the 1gen tundra are 66" wms to wms.

And the 1gen taco is 60" wms to wms. That's why 1st gen tacos put a tundra axle in the rear of a LT setup. Now for anything else about 2nd gens I have no clue.

 

No one cares about 2nd gen parts anyways.
