Are all oil catch cans vehicle agnostic?

No smoke in the engine bay

 

Now this has happened twice so far (losing oil) and both times the amount that was left corresponded to the size of the oil pan (about 1.5 qt roughly). I first thought the pan gasket was blown and replaced it (cause it was cheap and easy) but it happened again. I did check for signs of leakage around the pan and found none but then again that was when I was very low so maybe it dried after it lowered past that point. I have more oil in now so will check.

Catalytic converters will "filter" quite a bit of burning oil. I've seen vehicles use oil and not really show any signs of smoking, but then begin to have performance issues and/or P0420 DTC's. Pull the Catalytic converter and you can see how it's become plugged from oil being passed through it.

 

But is it correct to assume if I am indeed burning, that the spark plugs will show it? I can also do a cylinder leak down test.

 

If you're burning that much oil, then yes, you'll see deposits all over the spark plugs.

 

Yes, if oil is getting into the combustion chambers, you will see contamination on the plugs. Remove and check ONE AT A TIME. My dumbass cousin removed all of his without looking at them and couldn't figure out which cylinders had the contaminated plugs.

I have been running a catch can and can report I get between 1/2-1 cup of oil out of it every oil change.
I run this one, the one you linked to is a little cheap. I would recommend one of a little better build quality.

When you did the valve stem seals, did you ensure you used the proper ones for intake and exhaust?

Here is some more update: I just did cylind er leak down tests on all 6. Pumped the left gauge to 90 psi on each cylinder, before making sure it was in TDC. The right one was between 75 and 80 psi on 5/6 and only one cylinder wouldn't go past about 65 psi.

Do these test results indicate a problem? Should the right gauge always be the same as the left one on every cylinder?

 

From that plug, it looks like you do have some oil consumption. When you had the heads off, how did the cylinder walls look?
Though I still stand by the idea that you are losing oil through other means. At 3.5qt in 1500 miles, you should see more buildup on the plugs if it was all getting through the cylinders.

 

Nothing unusual. But before I had the heads off, I wasn't leaking oil.
