Edit: originally entertained thoughts of doing a SAS. Decided on mid travel. SAS would have been awesome but going to build according to what I will really use it for. So mid travel it is. Title changed on 5/31/16

What options are there to put some 35's or larger without a large lift?

I want maybe 3 to 4 inches of lift max. I am looking for off road performance not looks. I am thinking street legal rock crawler like I had with my 85 4runner on 35's with dual cases.

Same as 2nd gen, I've got icon ext coilovers at 2.75ish and all pro expo leafs and I've got 35's. You just have to cut them cut more then rub some then cut some more

    thanks, I agree.

So you are running a mid travel setup? Do you feel limited by your suspension as far as off roading goes? Just asking, I have never run IFS for serious off-road. I felt limited by 35's with 14" travel shocks on my old crawler, but I could live with similar performance. This may come down to which would cost less for the amount of performance I am looking for.

I don't feel limited, but I also don't play on the rocks much. Little lift keeps the low center of gravity, 35's let me bounce iver things easily and full skids protect where I drag. Unlike a solid axle you have more ground clearance under the front

You would likely be one of the first the SAS a 3rd gen if you attempted it, 10 years later there is only one off the shelf SAS kit for the 2nd gen and that's All-Pro's which runs about 8 grand for parts alone. All those parts may not work on a 3rd gen and would have to be custom made. Parts and labor would easily run 15k+ and you would be without your new truck for months. There's a member in the TLCA club I'm in who had a custom shop do a SAS on his FJ, the first shop took a year and messed it up which required another year at a different shop. These trucks don't have many people making the plunge for SAS so there are a few shops you could trust to do it correctly and that means time and money. Check out the SAS forum to see what it takes for a 1st or 2nd gen, then decide if it's worth being the guinea pig for the 3rd gen.

A lot cooler vehicles you could build and or buy for the price you'd dump into a brand new third gen just to hack it up

Good to know you dont feel limited. I am not sure I would have that much more clearance under the front, the 3rd member usually is the low spot. I have thought about adding the skids for the LCAs if I stick with it. full skids for sure either way

I realize that this early in the game cost would be high. I may not jump into it right away, but I do have some guys I really trust locally. I think they would be all in if I go this direction. Parts cost, I doubt I would buy the kit, would have to pull parts from elsewhere, D60:thumbsup: most likely. I am familiar with 1st gen, but not 2nd gen SAS. So research to be done on that part might take me a little bit. I dont mind being a guinea pig, they are furry and cute;)

A lot cooler vehicles? not sure what vehicle that would be. like I said, a street legal crawler is what I am after. Otherwise I would save up and get a purpose built tube chassis and work from there.

haha, my pleasure. I am genuinely following your thread, whichever direction you choose to go in (SAS or mid-travel) you'll be among the few pursuing such builds with the 3rd gen, and I for one would love to follow the progress of either. Good luck with whichever direction you go in!

One tons on 35s? Seems like a waste, what will you do about a transfer case?

35s for street. 38.5 or 40s for play.
Transfer case....I would love for Marlin to come and save the day. Big mike went and picked up a TRD sport access cab mt. I will have to go interrupt his thread with my nonsense.
Edit: I could keep the stock rear housing, diamond front, and keep 35s for street and play.

Good luck, marlins are on back order for quite some time.

I like the idea of a diamond front and factory rear. Why not do an atlas II? What transmission did they swap to on the new trucks?
