Are there 01-04 Tacos in the Salt Belt that is immune to rusty frames?

Is it a matter of fact that ALL 01-04 Tacos suffer from the rust issue if it has been primarily driven in the rust belt? Or are some fortunate few less immune from it?

 

My neighbor has an '02 that got the "treatment"...and the "Exteneded 15 year warranty", My '02 was re-framed....One of our operators has an '01,it got the "treatment" also while another driver ,re-frame on his '01...

Not sure what the exact % are BUT up here in NH looks about 50/50....

Can anyone give me the %'s of how many Dodge,Ford and GM frames were done ..

So that leads to another question... is the rust ratio of Tacomas on par with the other trucks? Or are Tacomas significantly more prone to catastrophic rusting?

See with toyota doing the buybacks and re-framing, it could be that they stand behind their products, but more than that it also makes it seem like something is out of the ordinarily wrong with the frames on these trucks...

 

Im not in the salt belt but I gave my dealership my vin and they said my vin was not one of concern. But I have very little rust on my frame anyway but I checked because I could move into a salt belt area.

 

i have a 04 tacoma and the frame was really clean when i picked it up, i sprayed her down with some 30 weight oil ( non detergant ) and its good to go!

 

I heard wd 40 from someone. I would use any solution for the problem. I really dont like the undercoating all over everything.

 

not real sure what the "salt belt" is but my truck came from VT before i bought it, and theres not a spec of rust of the whole truck....well there is a small spec on the rear bumper about the size of a pea

 

What do you mean when you picked it up? You mean you bought it recently used? Has the trucked lived in Ohio its whole life?

 

yup been in ohio all of its life it was used. i mean some surface rust like everything else. nothing bad at all. powerwashed it really good with hot water let it dry for two days and coated it in every nook and cranny.

 

how do you tell something is surface rust? Should it come off with a rag? or do you need to use wire brush to remove surface rust?

 

surface rust is like when you leave a piece of steel outside when it is not painted. Just the surface rusted.

the difference is in the second picture the steel is so rusty it will start to flake off. In the first it is just on the surface not weaking the steel or flaking off. someone please correct me if i am wrong

 

so there is no way in the first pic that the rust is thru the steel? In other words, if the rust is thru the steel, it will start to look like pic 2?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but DANA manufactured the frames for our trucks. They came from 2 plants and the frames from one of the plants didn't get the proper rust proofing applied and now they're rusting out.
The 01-04s get new frames because they still make the frame used on those trucks.
For the older trucks, the frames are no longer being manufactured, so Toyota just pays you to crush it.
As for the domestic trucks getting reframed... There's no way any of the big 3 would ever stand behind their vehicles as far as to put new frames on them.

 

I looked at the driver side frame which is visible when looking down from the engine bay. It looks like the weld point of the engine mount to the frame is all rusted and flaking off. I was able to push pieces off with my flash light...
