RULES for City Slicker 4X4 Owners

I'm hoping that people will add to this ... and sticky it. The object is to improve driving skills, take full advantage of the vehicles capabilities and hopefully, avoid accidents. Do you have a personal experience to share?

1) Before exiting a slippery parking lot, shift to 4H. This way your front wheels pull on the road while your back wheels are still spinning in the parking lot.

 

put into 4H at red light before lanes merge to beat other lane when its raining....

 

Don't forget to lockup that rear end for more rear traction

 

Remember to pull the E-Brake to make tighter turns in the fog.

 

thats the best way i AVOID accidents.

 

Be careful while downshifting on snow and ice... it can put you into a spin!

Don't think just because you have a 4WD your invincible. Most of the vehicles I see upside down here in the winter are trucks and suvs. Take it easy and use common sense.

 

Always floor it when making a right turn to kick the rear end out and score sick style points. (deductions for hitting posts, trees, and pedestrians)

 

make sure your watching your rearview mirror when you come to a stop in the snow, I often slow down early, to force the person behind me to slow down, then I just coast nicely to a stop, keeping my eye on them to be sure they can stop too.

 

If you want to keep everything on your 4X4 Lubed up, ACTIVATE 4H at least Once a Month, For at least 10 miles...

If there's no Dirt Around, then Activate it on the Freeway.

Then you will be

 

Receive a roadie while driving 70mph during a white out.

 

If you've previosuly cut me off during the daily commute (and I know who you are), and I later see you stuck in the snow. Don't expect me to stop during my free time and pull you back on the road.

 

If you are going to peel out and pitch your truck (with studded tires) sideways in the middle of the city, dont just look left, right and straight, because the cop is probably right behind you. (I was doing a ride along )

 

good thread, but I hope it won't be a sticky, I find there are already waaay too many sticky thread in here, they should be grouped into one.

 

For those with MTs: On snow-slicked roads/streets, shift up earlier than normal. Lower RPMs in each gear are less likely to break traction in both 2H and 4H....especially 2H. When slowing for a stop in traffic or light, use 4H to downshift....and slow earlier than usual. I know this is common sense...........er.........but.......well you get the idea..

 

The other day i almost go into a bad accident while it was raining. A bus was in front of me and the we were going threw a light. The light was yellow so i stepped on the gas a little so I could make the light. While i stepped on the gas the bus stepped on the brakes to stop at a bus stop right across the intersection. So i had to slam on the brakes. I started sliding across the intersection and was about to hit the back of the bus. The last second before i hit the bus i let go of the brake, regained control and was able to turn out of the way. If i stood on the brakes and tried to turn i would of ended up in the back of the bus. So if you are sliding/hydroplaning and need to make a turn make sure you let go of the brake before you turn.

 

It might help to throw chains on and air down at the slightest hint of snow/rain.

That way if it does rain/snow you won't be stuck doing this in the cold like all the other suckers!

 

Don't forget the gin and tonic while driving to the north pole. It is legal because your sailing "sliding" on international waters

 

If you have 4WD, USE IT. If you're on icy or snowy roads, do NOT rely on brakes. Braking is 60/40 (front/rear power). Have your 4WD on and downshift, lightly using the brakes. 4WD splits the power 50/50 Front and rear. Do not do high RPM downshifts though or your risk breaking free as well. Using the brakes will almost certainly put you into a slide on an icy downhill.


Always steer in the direction of the slide, as long as you are not braking, you should be able to gain control.
