Do you have alot of armor? If not then 650 should be enough. Maybe the coils you have on know are just worn out

No armor nothing done to truck at all. Just suspension. It's a possibility just coils are only 4 years old.

Get new coils, exactly the same that you have. Crank the driver side ones a hair more to compensate for Taco lean.

So I've read through most of this thread. I want to start going mid travel. I've got a 02 4x4. I want to start in the rear seeing as I don't have money for coil overs at the moment. It seems that the switch to Chevy leaf springs are the cheapest route. Correct?

I've read so much I think my eyes may bleed. Any opinions are appreciated.

Chevy 63s have been swapped in offroad trucks for years, well before they were ever put on a 2nd gen. Through the years, I've offroaded with more people in 4runners and pickups that run 63s front and/or rear then I have folks that own a 2nd Gen tacoma. Haha they def aren't a 2nd Gen thing.

I dont personally run them because I ordered a set of custom Deavers. This may get you on the right track. There are a few 1st gen guys in here that will be very helpful.

    Welcome BTW

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I lifted for the looks at first but I got over that real quick. I want it to be as functional as i can get it without breaking the bank. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

You've got a great start in the 02. That was my 1st Tacoma that fed my obsession.

@justlookin has a 1st gen on an OME setup with some sliders and it does awesome off road.

There should be a few 1st gen builds linked in the build section in the first page of this thread.

@a.smo has a 1st gen that he just picked up some Fox C/Os and some 12" smooth bodies for. He is doing a inboard setup but I think with Expos.

@JLee over at BAMF makes and 1st gen inboard relocate for 12" shocks that would probably pair really well with the Chevy's. He would be a great person to talk to for advice

Starting a build of your own and getting some 1st gen followers will also be great. That way its your thread and youre less likely to get shit on in it....

    ... Well maybe

    :D

That should be the extent of everything I know to help point you where you need to go for help. Keep us posted man.

I recently joined the 1st gen Mid Travel party too with a set of ADS coilovers and TC arms and some other bits and pieces.

As far as Chevy 63s go, every setup I've seen with them has like 2" of uptravel, and lots of down. I'm no expert in the matter, but it seems to me this is inherent in moving to a longer spring, but keeping a SOA setup. At least without having like 6" of lift. Not saying the 63s are a bad option, but consider what you want to do with your truck before swapping.

The 63s might be a cheaper spring, but it seems they're a bit more work. You'll have to weld new mounts on and put longer shocks on as well to use all of the spring. It may total out to be close to the same. It all depeneds on your needs.

Im actually running all pro standards. I got these for a great deal and don't think I'll be typically running 2-300 pounds in the back of my truck.

Awesome. Well as of now my offloading consists of deep mud holes (well as deep as my intake will allow), trips up into the mountains sometimes which has rocks and a few dropoffs but mainly super trenched clay paths. Not too hard to navigate but the full size trucks make it a bit rough because the tracks are wider and they must run tires way bigger than my 285/75r16s. I'll be building a new rear and front bumpers soon using 5x5 angle iron. Right now as it sits the truck has tundra bilstein 5100s up front set to max with stock coils, stock UCAs and spidertrax 1.25" spacers, the rear I just have extended shackles for the lift with 285/75r16s. It's not too bad but I'd like it to be better. The shackles look funny as well. Thank you again. I'll start a build thread soon.

    As it sits now.

What do you guys think of this rear setup for a 1st gen. This is what I want to do:
    Total chaos shock relocation kit
    King 10" double bypass
    Deaver j59
    [IMG]
Pic from total chaos. I have 285s on 3.5" back spacing(+1.25 spacers).

I think that shock is leaning way too far forward. When a shock is at an angle like that it's dampening strength is reduced greatly. If you are going to run a set up like that you will need custom valving to compensate.

I've never understood outboarding shocks on a first gen with the stock axle, but with that backspacing you may clear it.

I'm running 3.25" backspacing and 295/75/16s, and the stuffed side when flexing is like 1" from the frame.

Mine are not so far forward but have rubbing at full stuff with 3.5bs rims and 255's. This summer im going to try to redo the mounts to hopefully have no rubbing....

I just got this setup (minus the shock so far) should work well.

this isnt that much of an angle really when it comes to LT. and if somebody is doing this setup, they are already doing custom valving.

Umm yes, yes it is and no even on a LT rear set up you don't angle your shocks that much.

    Shocks are pretty angled.
But besides the angle, I'd be worried about rubbing the bypasses and bumps. I rub my bump cans and they're pretty flush to the frame, can't imagine how bad the bypasses would get hit
