    You know my opinion
Remember he's getting crap mileage with his current 04. The Firebird's 20 years older, carbureted and has more cylinders and is getting better mileage.

If you get another newer truck you'll get better gas mileage, even if its the 3.4. If you go with an old truck with the 22re you'll have an unstoppable rig. They're also easier to work on. Another advantage is theres more parts available to you. There's more of them in junkyards and most parts are cross compatible between the 4runner and truck. Cheaper too in a lot of cases

First thing I saw after I posted
I've got the cursed 3.0. Trucks with the 22re are known for never breaking. Look at the one they tried to kill on Top Gear as proof

I would say learn to wheel your 2wd first then decide. If you cant afford to fix it then why bother.

The old yota would be just a trail rig, the current one would be the daily. The thought being having a trail rig would be nice as I could beat on it without a lot of worries, also my brother is autistic & probably wont be driving soon however when he & I move out and he inevitability lives with me it would be nice to have 2 vehicles for the rare occasion where he needs to drive somewhere & Im busy.... just long term thought
Truuue, I mean I can tow with my current taco... not fast but it'll tow. Also mom's explorer has more towing power, she's considering a 4runner or FJ in her future though instead of a beamer
Ehhhhh big price difference, realistically I could just buy another 1st gen.... I do have the money but I'd prefer to have money saved after this for a rainy day fund, you never know.
Oh hahah no worries, it would be mainly a trail rig & maybe show off to my class mates every here & there hahaha. The current taco would stay my daiy.... although down the line it would be nice to have a 2nd vehicle for my brother to use as blah blah blah I explained above lol. I gotta take care of him you know
This truck wouldnt be my daily, mainly trail rig. In junk yards? I have never seen a old toyota in ajunkyard, only the occasional 4runner lol

Yeah it did lol. Did my comment seem butthurt?
I've seen a few but yeah you do see more runners. That's where that cross compatibility thing comes in handy. I can take anything off my neighbors truck except for the bed and it'll fit on my 4runner.

If I was to get an old yota there's the big debate between solid axle vs 22re
Not sure if that's toward me or not but I know there's definately more I can do with my truck but you know I'm thinking safety wise for myself & a lot passengers. 4x4 would keep me from getting stuck out in the middle of no where, although who knows maybe it'll allow me to do exactly that. I'll admit I'm a young kid who has a lot to learn & has been spoiled a bit but I don't know I just like the idea of having 4x4. I feel like there is a lot more potential also, I don't see the point of upgrading 2wd a lot unless I get into long travel & desert fun.
I'll admit I'm not mechnically inclined, but I really do want to learn & be taught you know. Hell I wish auto & metal shop is still an option in high school, wouldve taken it in a heart beat. Like you said I really dont know what I'm doing, a few people have offered to help but I'd prefer to not throw that on them.... which kind of makes me lean towards an older truck. It may be a bit more money in the long run, but an older truck would be better for me to learn on. Feel free to throw in your opinion oscar, everything is appreciated.

Nice!:D...ya 96-02 runners have a ton of compatible parts as well for 95-04 1st Gen tacoma's.

I love the idea if you can swing a trail rigged pick-up! @MuricaTaco... I mean when I first saw back to the future is where my yota love was born 2016-05-06-22-34-07-461187551.jpg

But kyle hit the nail on the head, the old 22re motors will literally run foreeevvveerrr!...but this is what I would have I'm mind

I would spend a bit of time learning a few things (self recovery, choosing lines, etc.) Getting a 4x4 can get you into more trouble if you don't know those things.

True there are compatible parts between 3rd gen runners and 1st gen tacos, but there's not as many and I NEVER see 3rd gen runners in junkyards. Been trying to find parts for my buddy Tim but haven't had luck.

That kind of looks like kinda like the Trekker, but its just a truck with a camper. Still sweet though!

    And since we're on the subject of the unstoppable 22re;

Knowing Nicklovin I think he meant straight axle or IFS but all the abbreviations and engine names and technical talk confused him haha
