    That is not true,
Picture of 2015 Tacoma parts (engine and short block) I am guessing 2016 is even easier since engine is produced in US. So engines are available but they cost much more so Toyota and dealer is going cheap route.if I was @perfectsoldier23 I would ask Toyota for new engine and if they refuse it, ask them to provide written reason as to why. take that to lawyer and see what you can get.
Regardless, I would trade that truck for F150 or even used 2gen Tacoma. truck that have engine malfunction because its towing 5000LB up the hill is pointless but Chief Toyota eng said that this truck was not made for towing, or payload. its lifted minivan not a work truck.

2gr engines are produced in US. only 1GR was coming from Japan ( at the beginning and end of production)

LOL Not for a lot of years now my friend. The Tacoma V6 is built here in Huntsville. Even the 2.7 motor is built here. I regularly talk to people who work on the 3.5 V6 and formerly the 4.0, you can trust me on this. Wikipedia has not as yet been updated to show the new motor but rest assured, its built here in Huntsville. All Tacoma and Tundra motors are built here and quite a few motors that end up in Camry's as well.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc. (commonly called TMMAL) is a car and truck engine factory near Huntsville, Alabama, United States. It is owned and operated by Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan. Construction of the factory completed in 2003.

    Engines produced[edit]

Additionally, both Tacoma and Tundra are assembled in San Antonio, not just Tundra.

Is OP a vet/soldier? Because if she is, that's two vets that Toyota is screwing over. If I'm not mistaken, the other fella on here who's truck is also broken is or was in the army.

Oil was NOT changed. I specifically asked what happened during the 5k service and he said "the usual: rotate tires, check fluids..." I asked specifically if they would check the oil and he said "No, we check and replace oil at 10k miles because your truck runs synthetic oil."
After the service, I drove about 200ft out of the dealership parking lot before my check oil light came on. I turned around and came back and had them check. They said my oil was still within normal limits but that they topped it off anyway. My check oil light didn't come on since then.
I don't feel as though I am being dramatic about the potential of getting in an accident on the freeway. When this happened, I lost a SIGNIFICANT amount of power. To where, if anyone was tailgating (as all do in San Diego), I stood a strong chance of being rear ended.

Just a basic training "drop out" due to an incorrect contract. Hardly a service member.

OK, " the usual rotate tires, check fluids". Excuse me but, engine oil is a fluid.

Then you drive 200 ft after they had the truck; and the light comes on.

This is the craziest set of circumstances. I for one, still think something happened in that dealership. " Check Fluids", come-on now, something isn't right.

I don't think the OP is being dramatic. Let's review.
Customer buys Toyota Tacoma for big bucks because their reliability & resale is considered stellar.
Customer new truck's engine shits the bed leaving customer stranded with a horse trailer off freeway after making first payment.
Dealership keeps truck 3 weeks & counting providing Toyota truck buying customer a Rav4 rental while throwing all sorts of parts at it.
Personally I would be pi$$ed. Even if the truck is fixed, it would bug me to no end. Sorry OP.
The truck would get traded if Toyota Corp didn't step up and do the right thing. Take the broken truck back to the Engineer lab or something. OK so Mike Sweers & all the other top dogs will take a slight hit on their quarterly bonus checks. Anyone that says oh no big deal swap for a sec with op, climb in that RAV4 & think about the time & cash spent on buying your brand new truck as in sits in some service bay.

Unfortunately, Toyota trucks are no longer as reliable or as well designed as in previous years. Additionally, Toyota manufacturer support for consumer after sale support is no better than a GM or Ford product. Tacomas are just another truck in the market place.

Releasing a new product with transmission issues and a sewing machine sounding V6 engine would not have occurred in the glory days of Toyota.

I love my new redesigned Land Cruiser, but my 3rd gen Tacoma is disappointing. Toyota must not have applied Kaizen (see pic) when designing and testing the latest Tacoma version.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. I had a 98 PreRunner that I bought new and the list of problems included the following.

    1. Stereo flat out died with less than 10K on the odometer. Replaced it with a Sony XPlode, took about 5 minutes.

    2. The plastic seat cover along the bottom of seat on the driver side popped off. This happened because the truck sits up high and you basically slide off the side of the seat to get out. Downward pressure stripped out the plastic mounting rivets and it had to be replaced. When I took it to the dealership I made it a point to tell them not to just put the damaged piece back on because I had already attempted that and it would not stay. Take a guess what they did? So after it failed again I chewed a service writers ass for about 20 minutes and they ordered a new seat cover.

    3. The brake light would come on whenever I would turn right. Started doing that at about 10K miles. Turn right, brake light comes on. I checked the master cylinder and the fluid level was between the hash marks where it was supposed to be. I took it to the dealership and they tell me, oh you just need a brake cleaning and its $40. Sounded like bullshit to me but I paid them to do it. Picked the truck up, left the dealership, turned right, brake light came on. Needless to say I was pissed. I went to the local auto parts store and bought some brake fluid. I added about two table spoons to the master cylinder and presto, problem fixed. The issue was that the fluid was just low enough that when I would turn right the fluid level would dip, hit the sensor and cause the light to come on. Now if the service tech had been wroth a shit, he could simply have added a little fluid, cleaned the brakes and I would have been on my way none the wiser.

    4. The key broke. At that time keys did not have the remote integrated and I didn't have keyless remote, so just a metal key with a plastic grasping piece at the end through which the key ring attaches. The part where my key ring attached snapped because it was just cheap plastic. They actually wanted to charge me $100 to replace it. So I went out on the sales floor, proceeded to chew the sales managers ass in front of customers about the shitty service department and the quality of service I had received at his dealership. Long story short, free key.

    5. Seriously weak engine. You guys who complain about no power today have apparently never experienced a 98 PreRunner 2.7 on the interstate. It would struggle to keep up with traffic. Around town it was fine, on the highway, it sucked, badly.

This was all on a brand new truck, less than a year old. So while I appreciate that Toyota makes reliable products because I've owned a few, lets not pretend that the problems the 3rd Gen Tacoma is having are something new. First year model vehicles have issues, this is true regardless of brand. This happens because car companies figured out a long time ago that it's cheaper to use the customer as the test bed than spend years testing a vehicle design themselves. Toyota is no different. I'd say give the new Tacoma a year to 18 months and most, if not all, of the issues will get sorted out. And for those concerned about the downsize in engine displacement, how quickly we forget about the 3.4 motor. My current car is a 3.7 Mustang and I'd take it over a 4.0 Mustang any day because it will easily outperform the 4.0 and keep up with Mustang GT's that were 4.6 equipped from just a few years ago. So don't read too much into engine displacement. Hell Porsche has been getting great performance out of sub 4 liter flat six cylinder motors for many years.

First off, for being nearly $40k, this truck shouldn't have a weak small motor that seems to have issues. It should have gotten a real upgrade.

Second off, Toyota doesn't fix issues in 18 months. It's more like 3-4 years for minor issues. Look at the 2nd Gen frame rusting out because it took 5 years for them to actually start replacing rusted out frames but they still put rust prone frames on the Tacomas after 2012.

... ^^^ ... If this sequence of events happened exactly how OP stated it ... IMO, there is a high degree of probability that the oil was mistakenly drained and then quickly refilled when OP came back after engine light came on after exiting dealership.

Can anyone else give a different explanation ... given OP's information and dealer's reaction and status of warning light ?? Why top off oil that is within normal limits and explain that to OP after warning light came on ?? Then warning light goes off.
You could bring Toyota Corp. into this ... on a "possible faulty warning light issue" ... to open this issue further. If dealer is saying this ... bring corporate into on this issue more with their resources and clout to get to the bottom of this bizarre situation.

This could be the reason that Toyota Corp is staying out of it ... but they must have an idea what could have happened.

None of the information from dealer fits with what happened to OP.

PS ... NO oil & DOUBLE oil .... can and does happen .... I have had this happened to me in 2 ways at a Subaru dealer .... i.e. (1) Vehicle was filled with oil without draining it (2) oil was drained and not refilled. I ALWAYS double check dealer now when I pickup my vehicles after ANY type of service.

Plausible theory. It wouldn't surprise me given that the Toyota care from the 2nd gen trucks included oil changes at 5k. I doubt that there would be a paper trail of this let alone letting corporate know that they screwed up a Toyota care service.

Well all I can tell is that if your that dissatisfied with it than what are you doing here? If you believe the truck sucks ass that badly and Toyota just can't get their shit together in a reasonable amount of time than why are you hanging out on a Tacoma forum for the last two and a half years. Do you actually believe you're going to convince anyone here to say "Well Feugo is totally right dude, my Tacoma is total bullshit and I'm gonna go buy a used El Camino". Because if you believe that I have a picture for you.
