I've read a few members here mention they got new owners manuals with updated service intervals for the automatic transmissions. How many of you have actually recieved this new manual? Does this change cover all 2ND generation automatics?

My truck's under my parent's name. I'd have to check to see if they got one but I'm interested in what it has to say...

I also saw the posts about changes in the Owner's Manual dealing with tranny fluid change intervals but haven't yet seen a notice, addendum or new book.

    It'll probably take a while.....

The floor mat issue has been out for months and months and I only just within the last month (?) got a notice about that.

:confused::confused: First I heard, what's going on that the service manual needs switched?

Boy, Toyota seems like they're dropping the ball lately. ...or, they're just taking ownership of their mistakes. Dunno

I think a safe bet would be the later of the two. It is also safe to say that not many, if any car manufactures will voluntarily come forward with a remedy when they make a mistake.

Weathertechs, personally fabricated tailgate lock, tint, extra D rings, Exactfit seatcovers, re-enforcing the tailgate and adding a leaf next week.
Yeah, good luck getting Ford, Chevy or Dodge to admit anything. I had a 2002 Ram 2500 go through 3 transmissions in 40,000 miles. But there was no problem, according to Dodge. The F250's with the 6.0L Powerstroke was, perhaps, the worst engine ever made. Did Ford do anything about it? No. Defects are going to happen in manufacturing. At least Toyota tries to fix it, most of the time. Back to topic, I got my updated manual two weeks ago. The only real change is the auto tranny fluid change interval. The funny thing is, I have a manual tranny. Seems they wasted a new service manual on me.

Could this be a 2010 issue only?

The two people who said they got one, both have 2010 trucks.

The 2009 guys get the TSB transmission flash.

What the hell did they change in the transmissions after 2008 and WHY? (if that's the case)

I think it has to do with the service interval. Instead of getting it flushed at 100,000 miles, they want you to get it flushed at 60,000 miles. I havent had a chance to read up on it.

I got a new Warranty and Maintenance Guide (about 60 pages) in the mail about a week ago (for a 2010). It came with a form letter stating the following:

    ----
    Subject: Updated Maintenance Schedule

The 2010 Tacoma Warranty and Maintenance Guide supplied with your vehicle has been updated to include required transmission service at 60,000 and 120,000 miles. Enclosed you will find an updated 2010 Tacoma Warranty and Maintenance Guide. Please discard the guide you received with your vehicle and replace it with the update.

Specifically, if you have used your vehicle for towing, the following services are required at 60,000 and 120,000 miles:

    Driving while towing
    - Replace automatic transmission fluid
    - Replace front differential oil (4WD)
    - Replace manual transmission oil
    - Replace rear differential oil
    - Replace transfer case oil (4WD)
    - Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body

Your dealer has been informed of this change and will be happy to talk to you about the appropriate services for your vehicle based on your specific driving habits.

Now you got me wondering Janster! I just looked at my 2007 scheduled maintenance guide, and it says under special operating conditions to change the "manual" transmission fluid every 30,000. Every 60,000 they change the wording to..."replace transmission fluid or oil". Unless Toyota is making new books to specifically say "automatic" I'd say I'm allready covered and it might just be a screw-up when they printed the 2010 guides.

As far as what changed with the 2009 transmissions, I've wondered that myself. I guess these on-board computers have a mind of their own.

Just got mine a couple days ago. Basically the main difference is changing the tranny fluid at 60k miles. However, it says that it only applies to those who tow or haul on a regular basis. I dunno. I'm a long way away from 60k and don't tow much so I'm not too concerned.

Nice call! I never even thought about looking in my manual. My truck is too new and never thought about it. Soooo...
I looked in my 2007 manual and within the 'maintenance' section and it mentions (Automatic) *Generally not needing to change it* (not in those exact words) but refers you to the "Scheduled Maintenance Guide".

I flipped through that 2007 Scheduled Maintenance Guide PASSPORT and....

At 60K miles or 72 months:
    Inspect Transmission fluid or oil
And underneath that - "Additional Maintainance Items for Special Operating Conditions" (driving while towing-4WD vehicles)
    Replace Transmission Fluid or oil

Then - the same thing at 120K miles and 144 months.

So - what's that telling me?? If I don't tow anything, I don't need to change my transmission fluid EVER? ... yeah O.K.....??
    No flushing either??
