Ahh. I see what you are saying. I was actually writing all of this while I was getting nagged at by the woman, so my apologies for not comprehending correctly.

I'm not talking about removing material off the snout however. I am simply talking about polishing any scratching of the snout that occurs when removing the old steel stock pulley. Which could potentially impede the install of the URD aluminum pulley. That's why I said start with 1000 and finish it off with 2000 if there is scratching. I actually would suggest polishing it anyways and then applying anti seize to the shaft before installing the pulley as a small insurance policy just to make sure there are no hang ups.

I will be using the Crash method of a toaster oven. Main reason being the garage I work at doesn't have a stove to boil water on. But we do have a toaster oven here. I'll use his 300 degree setting and let you guys know how it worked out. Waiting for it to get a little colder first. It was -30 last week and now it's in the 50's

It appears that various metals do expand more than others due to heating, but this chart shows no difference in expansion rate depending on the materials temperature. So heating the pulley an extra hundred degrees will make it expand as much again as boiling it does from ambient. And the difference in diameter in the snout of the SC from a 50 degree to 30 degree ambient is next to nothing, so better to work in the warmer temp for comfort.

This is what I was trying to explain w/o getting overly technical in thermal dynamics & such but some people just don't wanna hear it.

Great write up. My factory sc belt is starting to crack, need to change it soon. I might as well get the 2.85 pulley and install it while im at it.

Just joined the club!!! Did the install today at work. One of the easiest projects so far. Crash's instructions make this a simple install. Poor guy had to go through everything that could go wrong. But when nothing goes wrong and you buy what Crash recommends it is actually simple. I had a helper but could of done it myself(that's how lucky I got and how easy everything went)
Got to work at 8am. Pulled off the belt and radiator shroud cover. Set the puller onto pulley to sit while truck cooled.

2:45 pm Pulled off pulley and started to heat new one.
4:00 pm Installed pulley(went on smooth with no restrictions and was effortless)
    4:15 pm done.

My temp was around 30 Degrees today. Cooked pulley in toaster oven at 300 for about hour and fifteen minutes.

Thanks Crash and cant wait for my ride home tonight.....

Hey nice write-up. I was wondering if the added stress to the truck is considerable in your opinion? Will there be a significant amount of added wear or loss of reliability/durability?

I do not think the 6-7% (20-23hp gain) over stock at peak boost will have considerable impact. Keep in mind the peak boost level is only reached when you really lay into it, not all the time under boost. If anything it may cause slightly accelerated wear on the supercharger itself, since it is turning more RPMs. But I wouldn't classify either as significant. Example: the SC turns 5% more RPMs with the pulley than stock, so instead of a rebuild at 100k you may need to rebuild at 95k. Well worth it IMO.

Hey one more thing. Are you running the TRD air filter that came with the SC? I was reading some other posts where people said you have to have a CAI otherwise you risk not having enough air rushing in. Is it true? it seems unlikely, that tube is pretty thick.. I ordered the pulley though, curiosity and expectation are building up

With reading of my gauge, Crash is correct. I have a vac/boost gauge. The S/C does go into boost much sooner now(quarter throttle). Barley taping the gas pedal my gauge goes right into boost(just over the 0 for the vac side). Getting on it a little bit(3/4 throttle) is still goes to 5 or 6 on the gauge. But slamming it to the floor is when you see the 7 or 8. And that's where you can tell the smaller pulley is there. But for regular driving it seems to do everything a little sooner. Not crazy sooner but how it should be stock. And when you floor it, look out!! I love it and recommend it.

I am running the TRD filter that came with the SC. I have mixed feelings about these types of filters and swap it for the standard filter whenever I expect to encounter dusty situations (going out on the trail). The MAF will detect the amount of air coming in and put the appropriate amount of fuel in, so too little air is not a risk. The risk would be too much air and the fuel system cannot keep up, then the additional fuel over the stoichiometric ratio is not present to cool the mixture which could lead to detonation. The SC specifically says a CAI will void the warranty (likely for this reason), though CAIs are said to lean out the mixture with the SC for more power, since the factory tune is rich. (vs CAI being nearly useless naturally aspirated). With the pulley plus a CAI, I would want to have a AFR gauge for sanity to know where my numbers are at to make sure I am not getting too lean.

The stock air filter is definitely undersized and a restriction to the 2.85 pulley. I went from hitting 6.5lbs to 8lbs just by switching out the intake. It's a huge bottleneck to the system for sure.
