    The RR DIFF LOCK light goes solid when the lock is engaged. If it is flashing you need to slow down so it can engage. Also the ABS light comes on solid meaning it is disabled.

    3 inch toytec spacers 33 12.50s on steel wheels
    Did it to my 99 5 speed 2.7 a while back and nothing changed other than when I put it in 4lo the rear locks automatically. In 2wd I can push the button and it just blinks. Can't remember if it does anything in 4hi. Any ideas?

    They are rare but they were offered for one (maybe two) years when the TRD package was first introduced in the Tacoma.

    Can you hear the motor running when in park? Or does it only run when in drive?

    You can only hear the motor running when it kicks on and locks . Once its engaged you will not hear it at all

    I just got my first tacoma it is a 04 dc 4x4 I think it is a base model I seen in some tacomas a locker switch of some sort my truck dose not have this dose this mean I can't do the gray wire mod?

    That would be correct. Ya gotta have a locker! If it doesn't have the differential locking switch on the left ya don't have the E locker.

    Got stuck in the sand today and tried it while waiting for someone to pull me out and it started working for the first time since I owned the truck and pulled right out of the sand

    So to clarify, I am grounding the grey wire that goes into the 4wd CPU and NOT the wire that goes back in to the harness correct?

    Sorry, just want to be 100% before I do this.

    I noticed the rear diff locker button when I bought the truck in Florida last October. I think I pushed the button in 4 low to see if I could figure out what it did during my test drive. That was the last time I pushed the button. Until today. Today I decided that the grey wire mod would rise to the top of my list and so I read this entire thread. This took some time and, as usual, I learned a ton! Earlier in the day I confirmed what I knew. I do not have ABS brakes. So, one less light to look at. Just now I went out to see if the locker even works. Went out and started the truck and pulled off the pavement and onto some spongy wet grass and woodchips. Put truck in 4 high then 4 low and drove back and forth and then hit the rear locker button while in 4 low. Blink, Blink, Blink...... Never went solid. Figured maybe I'm going to have to service it. But, I had read the entire thread so I drive back and forth with the locker light blinking all the while in 4 low. No dice. Just keeps blinking. I think that maybe this thing has never even been locked. Undeterred I kept driving back and forth in 4 low and then the light stops blinking...stays solid. I take it out of 4 wheel drive and light starts to blink but that slower blink. I put it in 2 hi and drive down the road and back. Pull onto the grass again and go to 4 lo. Hit the locker and blink blink blink...no dice. Start to drive forward and backward and then bingo! Solid light again. Third time through all this the light went solid instantly upon pressing the locker button. So, tomorrow when the sun is out I'm going to do the grey wire mod! My primary reason is that I get stuck in the least bit off snow when on a slight grade and I just need a little more traction to get moving and then I'm good. After 17 years the rear differential locker is now going to get used at least a dozen times a year. And honestly, if I ever sell the truck, I'm pretty sure that showing this to a buyer is going to make a good impression. THANK YOU to all the posters on this thread who made this whole process understandable. My advice to newbies is to read the whole thread. Then check to see that you have or don't have ABS just so you know what to expect with lights on the dashboard. Cycle your diff locker a few times so you know that it works and how long it takes and all that. Then do the mod. I'll post up my mod photos as soon as I'm done.
