I've never seen a line of fire like this, and I spent a lot of my early career flying fire patrol and fire mapping. Using scoopers on a fire of this size and intensity would be like trying to put out a bonfire with a squirt gun. Don't think anyone was prepared for such an early start to the fire season either. The tankers are just coming out of winter storage, the ice is just off or coming off the lakes up north, and the crews are just wrapping up their spring training. Quebec is scrambling to prep 4 CL415's to send west, and rumour has it that the Martin Mars will be showing up soon. This has the potential to be a very busy fire season across Canada if we don't see some rain soon. Very little snow last winter and a pretty dry spring have made forests a tinder box.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Fort MacMurray in the coming years. Pretty much its sole reason for existing is in support of the oil sands industry, and oil isn't doing so well. Most of the people living in Fort Mac aren't from Fort Mac. With a lack of jobs and possibly nothing to return too, how many will actually go back?

Seen some unusual traffic here that last few days - approach for the airport is just due north of me a few blocks. I was wondering if they weren't making a pit stop here on their way north to help with the fire.

What did I just read? Low price & airplane? In the same sentence?

I'm always amazed at work at the $. Most of our parts & materials have the unit cost on the servicable or ship tag. There are lots of days we change parts that are worth enough to pay for a very nice retirement.

haha... well it is a Mooney... parts are quite a bit cheaper (relatively speaking) than the planes you're playing with ;)

Except for that damn gear down light unt... it was $1800

I've actually never flow or been in a Mooney but, they sure offer some efficient speed.

I've got a PPL and 60 hours if anyone ever wants someone in the right seat near Houston. Happy to just navigate or manage the radio.

Mooneys are fun as hell... feels like a little sports car... once we sell 46JL, we're picking up a M20K 252TSE :D Very exciting.

Damn I gotta get out more. I kept thinking Power Plant License instead if private pilot. To much AC MX & not enough flying.

You moving towards a flying career or pleasure?

Just for fun. It's hard to make money in the flying business.
