Should she stay in her current 08 mustang. its only got 13k miles on it and in good shape but she is upside down on the payments.

she Likes the H3's alot. but I dont think that would be that great of a choice.
Im slowly getting her to like the FJ cruisers:D

She needs a bigger vehicle since we have a baby on the way

    edit, 4runner option added

If she is upside down in the stang why would you want to trade it in and dig a deeper hole? Unless you guys have cash and are going to pay off the difference plus a down payment on the new vehicle I would stay with what you have.

Without even reading your post I chose the FJ. It isn't rocket science. Crappy GM or crappy Ford VS. the FJ.

First off, congrats on the baby on the way.
I would choose none of the above but there wasn't a choice. FJ would be best, but with those half doors I would think it would be hard to get the baby in and out of the back seat. Maybe it's more roomy that it seems to me? Not sure.
I definitely wouldn't keep the mustang though. And the H3s look horrible to me, just my opinion though.
We traded my wifes huge Montero for a Honda CR-V (much better on gas) and she really likes it. It's got the vtec engine so it's peppy too, although she complains it doesn't have enough power for her lead foot.
Other than the 4runners, not too much of a full size SUV fan myself.

Most people remain upside down in car payments for the first two years or more. The only way not be upside down is to put good money down/trade or send more money to the bank each month to pay down the principle. If she is going to wrap the inequity into a new loan make sure she plans to drive the vehicle for more than a few years.

If it was me and I was unside down in a car. I would swap with her. I would rather have my wife and kid safe in a truck than a car.

Yeah if you have a new baby, the car seats are turned backwards...that would be a PITA with a FJ. My suggestion would be to get out of the stang while you can. Making normal scheduled payments on it will not get you out of the hole unless you are planning to keep it until it is paid off. The value on that stang is going down everyday so the sooner the better even though you are going to have to lump that money you are upside down on the next vehicle. For the next vehicle I would go with something that is a little more economical than the H3 or the FJ. 4runner probably is not much better but will hold value. I would think a nice Highlander or CRV. You get some good room and still fairly economical on fuel. I have a feeling the next year we are going to see some big fuel increases. If not in 2010 the next year. As soon as the traders start to see the economy come back the barrell price is going to ride with it...just my .02
