So I have some pretty bad scratches on the side of the truck from brushing up against bushes while off roading and using it to haul stuff during our remodel. I was thinking about getting the entire truck wetsand to remove them. What’s the general opinion on this? Is it bad for the paint overall? Is it ok to do it just once every 3-4 year? Any other options I should look in to?

you should take it to a professional... i dont think its good for the paint, remember that you will be removing paint with wet sanding...

This was about 10 washes ago, still very visible.

And I would be paying a body shop to do the wet sanding.

thats probably gonna be more than a "wet sand" maybe try and buff them out. if that does'nt work then It'll probably need a re-paint

Wouldn’t wetsanding do more then a buffing? All of the dirt and dust makes it looks a lot worst then it is.

wet sanding is going to strip it down, alot. and probably remove paint, like eordonez said. that seems like a pretty harsh path to take man. I have only wet sanded once and it was on a week old paintjob that needed to have the clear coat imperfections sanded off...

I've seen wetsanding used on a exotic (Ferrari IIRC) to remove a scratch from the rear end.

If you are taking it to a professional- Choose a shop and then go talk to them about what they would do. They may tell you they can buff/wax it and it'll be all set....or they may tell you to get to repainted.
Photos can give us a bit of an idea- but they'll be able to see true depth and what not-

    Best of luck!!

He meant 1500 grit. I personally would not go more coarse than 1500 grit on a cured paint job.

Can you feel the scratches with your finger nail? A good rule of thumb is if you can feel them with your nail then they won't come out. They will still clean up, however.

Take the truck to the body shop for a detail. They will give you estimate to the repair and what kind of results to expect. Also, they will determine which areas to wet sand and polish, and which areas to just polish.

Wetsanding is very risky, especially if you've never done it before. It is typically done to knock down orange peel, not remove scratches.

A good polish will most likely take those scratches out. I see you are in So Cal...PM me and maybe we can get together and I'll do one panel for you n/c so you can see what a good polish can do.

take it to the polish and wax dude, it's likely that most of it will buff out

Try waxing it first and see if that takes some stuff off. I took my mom's lancer to Montana and went down some back roads while there and got the paint scratched not quite as bad, but almost as bad as yours, and I just brought it home, washed it, and waxed it. She couldn't tell the difference. It is silver though...

Try waxing, and if that helps but isn't satisfactory, I'd try wetsanding to smooth out the gaps, and then buying some nice clear coat to try and fill in the remaining gaps. I know they sell filler primer, maybe they sell filler clear coat :notsure:

definately do not wet sand. a car comes from the factory with a certain amount of "orange peel" if you wet sand spots the orange peel will be gone and it will be quite noticable, unless you do the whole truck(2000grit). i would try to maybe lightly buff(you can also buff too much). or take to a shop.

try buffing with a finishing compound first (a very fine grit compound)
