Can you show me one documented case were one transmission was damaged, verified by the factory as being the sole reason for failure by being 1 quart low on ATF from the factory and I'll be a believer.
But It’s been my experience that in R/L (real life) or real world, transmission failures are caused by a number of other issues as opposed to just being a little low on ATF.
I’ve seen torque convertors, the main component just fall apart on vehicles that were perfectly filled, and the trans or ATF never was overheated.
In a recent failure, the torque convertor has intermittent fail symptoms starting at just a couple thousand miles and complete failure at 45-50k.
I’ve seen ppl drive older cars until their vehicle stopped moving, add ATF fluid and drive off. I’ve also seen them drive till they can no longer stand the whining noise from low ATF lvl, add fluid and drive off (smh).
These are some extreme cases I’ve seen in regards to ATF levels, and in no way do I approve or would I drive like that, I’m simply stating a case in point.
Most failures are caused by defective parts, low quality parts from a vendor cheating or cutting the material expense, or metal/material fatigue from old age, than from driving a quart low on ATF fluid.
But hey, believe what you will, add fluid and watch all your problems disappear (sarcasm) if you will.
But the hysteria and allegations that the transmission is gonna take a crap from being a “little” low on ATF is of no merit to me based on what I’ve seen.
Having said that, the off-road crowd has a bit more extenuating driving conditions than the rest.
They may have bigger heavier tires, mud, steeper hills, slippery slopes, back & forth shifting.
All these and more put more stress on the drive train and may cause higher temperatures.
But the engineers have counteracted these by offering different diff ratios on 4X4's, and heavier cooling and ATF fluids.
In fact, today's new ATF fluids are way better than they were 20, or even 10 yrs ago.
Most are synthetic and able to withstand much higher temps without braking down.
Therefore, I’m I worried? Hell no!
But those that are should ease their mind in whatever way they feel they need to.
Be safe everyone & have FuN!
    Cheers!

Dealer found my auto transmission fluid in my 2016 TRD Off Road 4x4 with tow package 3/4 quart low @1500 miles.

They also were happy to add grease to 5 zerks and check differential levels and reset memory. ( I already performed the u-bolt check and torque)

Toyota of Poway, CA service writer John S. was great to work with and understood TW ability to root out real problems.

I gave them a single sheet of paper saying what was problem and what I wanted them to check and how. He said "big thanks" and just attached my list of todo's to the work order that said "see attached".

Ok so this happened with gen 2's when they launched as well. Are there any theories on why this is happening? And STILL happening? Toyota obviously knows about this by now. I realize the gen 3's are selling like hot cakes but this problem certainly can't help them.
