I'm betting the Tundra and Tacoma have the same seats, depending on what assesory package.

It makes you wonder how many other Tacomas with similar issues that aren't on the forum.

Food for thought... this is not the only vehicle that this engine goes in. It is in the Lexus RX350 and GS350. The engine itself has some history so dont muddy the waters by saying this is a Gen 3 issue.

True, but what is the towing capacity for the lexus? Is the Tacoma underpowered or did they overrate the tow capacity on the taco? I know there have been many others towing with no issues so that may a moot point, but since we are serving Food for thought here!

The general design has been used on other vehicles, but I do believe there are quite a few new components specific to this engine.

I've said this once and I'll say it again. This engine is not meant to be in a truck. Getting marginally better mpg's at the expense of performing truck like duties is a mistake.

Look at Expedition Overland's 2016 Tacoma build. They have to go lower weight on all their mods compared to their previous 2012 Tacoma because I have a feeling they had to compensate for the weak engine.

Main changes: Wide VVT-i (VVT-iW on intake); on the fly Otto/simulated Atkinson-cycle changes; slight power bump; ULEV III; integrated exhaust manifolds w/ water cooling
D-4S dual injection continues as does its 11.8:1 CR.

    GS350:
    311hp @ 6400rpm
    280lb-ft @ 4800rpm

    Tacoma 2GR-FKS:
    278hp @ 6200rpm
    265lb-ft @ 4600rpm

The new 2GR-FKS / FXS engines were developed to achieve stringent fuel economy and emission targets and respond to recent innovations in the field. The major parts of the 2GR-FKS/FXS engines were re-designed based on the well-received dynamic performance and fuel economy aspects of the 2GR-FE engine. The aims of this development were as follows.

    1
    Best-in-class power performance

    2
Environmental performance that maximizes thermal efficiency and complies with fuel economy and emission regulations in each country by a wide margin

    3
Engine response typical of V6 engines through drastic weight reduction of moving parts

To achieve these conflicting aims, the developed engines use a modified version of the D-4S fuel injection system, which enables selective use of direct and port injection, in addition to advanced technologies such as variable valve technology (VVT) with a mid-position lock system and an exhaust port cooling system.

What i dont understand is why decisions like this cant be made by the consumer. When i drove 90 miles a day 6 days a week i bought a jetta tdi. Now I drive 20 miles 5 days a week. Mileage plays no part in my decision of buying a truck, if it were then i wouldn't be buying a truck. The epa has forced companies to do things to pass their requirements and the ones who suffer are the consumer. We should have a choice if want a car engine in a truck or a truck engine. Im sure toyota would love to drop a v8 in or a 4.0 v6 again but its not their fault that they cant. But we just continue to do what ever the epa tells us until were all driving electric cars.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
I bet its those cheap ass heads on that engine. 2gr has history of problems (google 2gr oil leak for example), so now on the top of weak bottom new heads have DI and PI, and bet you heavy engine load makes them flex.

I don't think there is enough data yet to trend this engine as unreliable. I'll hold out opinions 'til the 2nd or 3rd year, I'll bet a lot of this noise will disappear.

I think the trend is already starting. The OP says she can't get her truck fixed in a timely matter because some engine parts are on back order and she's 4th in line. That means that there are other similar engine failures.

Can you quote me #s of failures to #s of Tacomas sold? I don't think you have enough data to start proclaiming trends.

I kinda agree with both of you. Just not enough data and of course sales to back up the correlation.

I do know Toyota does lots if testing before an engine goes to the public.

I'm gonna keep an open mind.

Do you want me to spoon feed you too? Compared to the release of the 2nd gen 1GR when it first came out, the 3rd gen engine is already behind with the reported engine failures in the first year. That's not including unreported.

How about you do the research for yourself. Look at the first years forum posts in 2005 when the 2nd gen came out.
