Dude, I'm not the one spouting that these engines are unreliable. I clearly stated there needs to be more data. Please show me what info you have that these are are worse than 2nd gen.

I'm talking about reported failures withing the first year. So far there's been 3 reported on this forum with the 3rd gen. I already told you where to look in the 2nd gen forum. I'm not going to hold your hand. Look for yourself in 2005 on the 2nd gen forum and count reported engine failures.

Do you think Toyota is really going to release numbers on engine failures? That's why forums exist. Because there would be communication on what to watch out for and maintenance issues long before Toyota would ever admit to anything. (Example: the 5 years it took to get the ball rolling on 2nd Gen frame replacements)

This forum also has 100k more members than it did when the 2nd gen released. You can't exactly compare the 2.

100k more members don't mean owners. We shall continue to see how this 3.5 motor performs, but from my perspective, it's not looking good.

In January 2016 Toyota sold 12K+ Tacoma's they have been selling since roughly October 15. If they average 10K sales a month since then you're looking at over 50k+ units sold since then. And with 4 report so far engine failure, I would still say that's pretty good for mass production failure rate I would say 4 out 50+K. That's less then one ever 10k units sold. So with the average you are looking at less then 10 failures per 100k units

I am in the same boat, been debating on ordering a TRD PRO/ TRD OR 6MT Tacoma or buying a much cheaper SR Double Cab 5.7 4x4 tundra with the 8 feet bed.

A friend of mine has the new baby Duramax Colorado. it's a fuckin nice truck compared to my 14 Tacoma, but it's been in the shop twice because of destroyed belts. The 1st gen Colorados had a number of issues and it seems like the new ones (especially diesels) aren't immune either. He's on his 3rd belt in under 5000 miles.

Get a tundra I would have one if parking wasn't tight where I work.

This is what I am considering trading this truck in for. I've been looking over everything regarding the new Colorado Turbo-Diesel and so far really like it. I'm just 1/2 way between the decision at this point.
According to what I'm reading regarding the Lemon Law, I have to go through arbitration which can take up to 40 days before results regarding a refund or new truck. Not something I'm looking forward to if I go down that road but...may be necessary.

    Yeah.
It's not a new engine. This engine is based on the V6 platform that has been used on several Toyota and Lexus models, including the previous generation, with adjusted displacement and valve timing. It's a solid engine for its intended purpose and may need some tweaks to get it right, but that doesn't mean everyone's is going to fail. Some small percentage will fail, and there is usually a good reason for it. This is no different from any manufacturer.

That said, the intended purpose of this truck was not to haul horses at near the max towing capacity day in and day out. Occasionally, sure, but being easy on it. It's a 3.5L for Jeebus sakes. I'm sure that Toyota would expect it to be able to handle it, though. Working with them in a reasonable fashion would probably solve the problem. Trading it in on a Colorado is just trading one set of problems for another.

But this is America. Do, say, and think what you want.

I bought a vehicle with a 6200lb towing capacity so I can tow things. People who say "why didn't you buy a different truck if you wanted to tow?" - because this truck tows. It has been rated to tow at that capacity and being more than 1200lbs UNDER the capacity to me is not "near max." Also, 5000# was a high estimate. I don't expect the forum to understand the weight of the individual horses involved but I estimated a 2 year old baby at the weight of a fully matured adult horse just for shits. I needed this truck for it's towing capabilities, it's MPG, functionality and reliability. To me, no other mid-sized truck offered on the market today matches those ratings.

Yes, I will tow with the truck I bought with the intended towing capacity and I will FULLY EXPECT this vehicle to perform properly at all weight limits so long as it's beneath what the capacity is specified at. Otherwise, what the hell is the point in the rating?

You also assume "towing day in and day out" and are incorrect (maybe ask before assuming information you don't know?). I've towed less than 10 times with this vehicle since it's purchase date of December 22nd, 2015. All local and within 25 mile distances.

You're in California? Regarding a decision, those pictures of the engine and burnt pistons should be ample evidence. If Toyota is smart, a new truck would be a LOT cheaper than the negative PR. And I don't think you'll even need to make idle threats. Just tell them you'll settle for a new version of the truck you bought. That's totally fair.

    Otherwise, facebook. :D

Hey Lindsay, don't get all fired up over these guys. They don't know what you do and they are not Toyota engineers.
Did you ever get an answer on a cause of failure, or is just at the point you are letting the dealer do what they think needs to be done?

I havn't read through the entire thread, nor am i sure if this can cause the truck to go into limp mode, but did you watch to tow until you had 500 miles on truck for propper break in? Also did you use ECT and shift mode up to 4th gear?

Not sure what exactly caused the problem but good luck.
