I have been working at figuring out how I would like to build a weekend camping slide in truck camper. I have come to a settling point with this little project. Enjoy.

0329161737a.jpgI was a little skeptical at first if this layout was going to work. I am very pleased on how it is turning out.

Did a little more work on it this weekend and got in the other window and door. I broke my router in the process and it will need to be replace at some point, until then I finished the cuts with a jigsaw.

Did some fiberglass work and started sealing the exterior with resin. Coming along very nicely.

    That is cool.
I have to ask though because I've been wanting to do something like this for a while. Why did you choose plywood rather than insulation to make your form since you are adding fiberglass anyway?

If I were to make another I would probably go the insulation board route. I was not sure of my fiberglass skills and resin skills so I tried to keep it as minimal as possible.

Yeah, I have a cost list going.
Time is free, it has been a hobby this spring for a trip this summer.
Weight is something I am fighting right now. Design and construction of a low cost leg or lifting system to lift ~275# right now.

It was a busy weekend, after work yesterday I test fit windows, door, and how it looked on the truck. I am not sure on if I mount spare tires up on the bed rail for a Safari look. Opinions?

I inverted the box and started coating the base with Resin. I also started staining the interior. I have consumed a lot more resin than originally anticipated and I am now looking for marine resin primer. I think I will forego gelcoat as originally planned for brush on enamel paint, as you all know the primer is just as important as the paint.

I am also getting tired of lifting it in and out of the bed of the truck. It is not fun and very cumbersome, I already had (1) catastrophe where it tipped over and broke the legs. I may consider a small trailer idea as an alternative.

I'm curious why you decided to not have the camper span over the bed rails to make it a bit wider at the top

Honestly, @OZ-T I have asked myself this many of times. It came down to space available to construct it. I have really considered trashing the whole thing and starting again. I was actually just looking at different layouts in CADD drawings I have as a scratch pad. I am about 15% away from trashing the idea and going for a teardrop.

My first idea was with aluminum tube frame and SIP style insulation board between veneer (interior) and aluminum or painted wood (exterior). I may go back to this idea. I would be lighter and allow for more space.

My trip was postponed until September so I have a little more time for construction.
