Are SBR's worth it? I have a 16" LWRC and its great, I dont get to shoot it as often as I like, but there was a DD MK 18 at my local gun shop and it was hard to hand back.

So I play around with the idea of selling my LWRC and buying the MK18....just wondering if it's worth the NFA hassle or not and if they're as cool as they look.

I have two sbr's. One mounted behind my back seat (Click build for more). The other is my home defense gun. I thought they were both worth it.

    Those are sweet!

How is it when traveling? Or letting someone else use it? Do you have to keep paperwork with you at all times?

Absolutely, get a spare Lower and build it as an SBR, make a trust with wife/kids so they can legally access when you're not around.
I have a 7.5" SBR and though it's a little short (I have to train to keep my assist hand against the magwell) it'll be a perfect home defense gun with a suppressor and TLR-1.

Also keep in mind you can have multiple short uppers with a single registered lower.

I keep a copy of my approved application in the pistol grip of my SBR.

If you travel out of state you're supposed to contact BATFE for permission.
I believe you can let other people use the firearm if you are close enough to be "in possession".

^Thanks! thats about what I've heard as well. I never shoot my LWRC more than 100-200 yards anyway. I have a hunting rifle if I want to shoot further which is never. So the thought is intriguing.

On the topic of SBRs, a friend of mine was talking to bill Alexander (of Alexander arms) and the topic of SBRs came up, he has apparently been messing with a 10" 6.5 Grendel and it's sweet out to about 600 yards, I was kinda impressed by that

No issues, however, to cross state lines, there is an ATF form to fill out, but I haven't had a need to at the moment. I have a copy of the form miniaturized in the grip.

    Not really.
You can do it 2 ways:
Trust (What I did) or Individual.

A trust you can have a lawyer set up (Cost me $200), you can add any person as a trustee (A person with access to the Item) or as a beneficiary (The person who automatically becomes the Grantor (What you are) if you die/default the trust to them.
With a trust anyone who is a trustee can have access to the item even when you are not around as they have permission from the trust, however the beneficiary cannot be a trustee, which means that a trustee must be with the beneficiary if He/She wants to use the "Item".

As an individual you have to fill out a form, get your Chief law enforcement officer (CLEO) to sign off on you being able to own a NFA item, get fingerprinted, get a passport photo taken and send all that in.
As an individual your "item" must be inaccessible by anyone unless you are present.

in other words if you have a suppressed handgun as a home defense weapon and your wife uses it while you are away you could be in lots of trouble if anyone found out.

However, July 14th there are going to be changes to these rules.
    As of 14/07/2016:
An Individual will no longer have to get a signature from CLEO, instead both individuals and Trusts must send a copy of all applications to make or transfer a firearm, and the specified form for responsible persons, as applicable, be forwarded to the chief law enforcement officer (CLEO) of the locality in which the applicant/transferee or responsible person is located.

All "responsible persons" (trustees and grantor on a trust) must send in Photograph and Fingerprints with any application to make or transfer a firearm. If you have already sent an application to make or transfer a firearm and it has been approved within the last 2 years you do not need to re-submit fingerprints and photos unless changes were made to the list of responsible persons.
Of course you must submit fingerprints and photographs for your first application after the new rules (ATF 41F) go into effect.

Now, if you made it through all that and you're feeling like it's not worth it drop by your local gun dealer that deals with Class 3, they will simplify it.

If you're going to buy as opposed to building you certainly can't go wrong with DD. I want an sbr with a can when I move to America.

Trust is definitely the way to go. I build both of mine. My longest wait was for the suppressor. That took almost 5 months.

Yeah I'd probably build the lower. I built the one on my LWRC and its mostly fine. Spikes lower, the trigger and grip suck though.

Check out the Magpul MOE K2 grip, extremely comfortable even for my XL hands.

I did my build with a Spikes stripped lower. Just had to get building my own out of my system. I used a Geissele G2S and bcm grip. All future builds will be BCM or LMT Defender complete lowers.
