Repost from the 2nd gen side...

So I've currently got two trucks I'm looking at:

2015 DCSB sport w/12k miles, JBL w/nav (steps and skit plate added). I can get it for $27.5.

    Or

2016 DCLB sport w/1.2k miles, steps and bed cover added. Would try to get it for $31k.

I know all tacos have excellent resale but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra $3.5k for the new model. It does have the keyless start, better looking wheels, little better fuel economy, etc. I'll have the truck for about 2 years and will probably put 30k miles on it. im assuming there will be a lot more used new body tacos fs in a couple years and the 2015 will depreciate just a little more because people will want the newer tech that the 2016 has. I would also be more tempted to add more to the 2015 (such as a bed cover) that the 2016 has already, putting the cost of the 2015 closer to the $28.3k mark.

I know it's mostly personal opinion, but what do you guys think?

2015 is probably a better financial investment if you're only keeping it for 2 years, from both the buying side and the selling side IMO.

The 2015 is a private party sale. Businessman that doesn't drive it enough because of traveling and is selling because he is moving to Canada for work and it is not cost effective to bring it with him. Good point about the 2016. Its at a chevy dealership so I was chocking it up to not liking the truck.

I do like the price of the 2015. I think it is a good deal for a 1.5 yr old truck and the JBL is a bonus. I was figuring it would probably be worth around $25k in a couple years where the 2016 will probably be worth $28k.

Just assuming you'd take the hit on initial depreciation on the 2016 whereas the PO of the 2015 has taken it, which will save you some money up front and also put more in the pocket when you sell.

Consider also that there is a definite and real demand for the "last of the 2nd gens," that 2015 is the newest 2nd gen there will be. The 2016 has more bells and whistles, but it also has some serious growing pains - it could very well be that 2016 will be a production year known for a reasonable amount of issues that may get ironed out by the time you sell, and as such will be less in demand compared to a 2017, or the 2015 still.

Conjecture for sure, but something to bear in mind.

All good points. Appreciate the feedback. The carfax is reporting 2 owners on the 2015 for some reason, but the seller has all the original paperwork from buying it new. Not sure if he put a loan on it when he bought it for additional rebate savings or something and paid it off a month later triggering the title changes. He will provide all original paperwork with the truck to show I am the 2nd owner.

FWIW, I'd personally not be willing to buy a "new" 2016 with 1k miles on the ODO.

I don't know if that bothers you at all, but if the sticker says $31k and it has almost 1500 miles, I'm not interested in $31k.

    The 15'

Wouldn't take a used current year model, from a competitor's lot, with that low of mileage. That's a sign that there is something potentially wrong with it. My gut feeling, and opinion, anyway.

As a 3rd Gen guy I say get the 2015, the 2016 looks cool and all, but the 2015 is a more proven design with less stuff to go wrong and does not have the same number of issues that the new generation has so far. Also the lower end torque of the 4.0 offers a more pleasurable driving experience. The 3.5L lacks balls and feels gutless. If you have your heart set on a 3rd gen and can wait another year I absolutely would wait until they get some of these problems worked out. It is very annoying to have a brand new vehicle with so many issues and even worse is Toyota and the Dealership Service Departments just thumb their noses at the issues saying it's normal for the truck or largely pay lip service by "opening a case" which magically does nothing for you.

Looks like you are just down the road from me. Thanks for the input. Based on all the input it seems I will probably stick with the 15.

I would go 2015. I paid $28 for a 2013 with 40k miles last November. I like the looks of 2nd gen better

Agreed. Pretty disappointed in Toyota in all the claims I am hearing about the 16's (the stealerships stating that poor/continuous shifting, annoying vibrating, etc is "normal"). I've checked out Carcomplaints.com and it's sad to see (already) the number of problems (reported).
OP, I would exactly do what Smitty stated; wait on the 3rd gen for now. But in the end, it's your decision. Do what you think is right. Hell, give the 16 a test drive. Find out for yourself how the two compare against each other. Best of luck!

We were driving up into the high country the other day on a highway (6% grade) and my buddy remarked about how the engine was screaming at 4500 RPMs in 4th gear to stay at 70mph. He said "Do you have a 4 cylinder? Damn I'm surprised you towed a camper up here with this thing... motor sounds like it's going to overheat or blow up." These trucks do well off road however, and that is important to me. I think the 2016 is not exclusively better than the 2015 in off road performance however.

I sold my Dad's 13 a year ago with 24k miles (w/JBL) for $27.5k, so I recognize the 15 I am looking at is a reasonable deal. Thanks for the price comparison.

What gasoline V6 in a truck isn't relying on high RPM pulling?

Only thing I've ever owned that in a truck that wasn't sounding like a mouse on a wheel when I needed power was a V8. Everything else doesn't have it.

    Am I missing something?
