I have this too. It's another "characteristic of the vehicle". The service manager I was working with, who was excellent, reproduced it a few times himself. It seems worst for me when stopping on an incline.

The first time it happened, I thought I got rear ended it was so abrupt. Since the first 300 miles it hasn't happened as often and it has that "accidentally let off the clutch to fast while downshifting" feel to it.

Same thing here. 4x4 OR DBLCB Auto 7.5k.

It seems like a hard down shift into 1st (or 2nd) when braking harder than normal from 25mph.
1st time it happened I thought I got rear-ended, too!

I'm sure ye olde dealership would classify it as normal, or cannot reproduce.

So, they offered to buy my Tacoma back, but I'd end up losing 2 grand out of the deal. Thinking I'd be better off just keeping it and hoping they come up with a TSB in the near future.

edit: Thought about this after I posted. WHY are you losing money on the deal? They should "make you whole" in my opinion. You shouldn't be any worse off than the day you walked in to buy. I'd hit on that point if you try to work a deal on another ride.

HAve you thought about working that buy back into a deal with a new or a used Tundra/4Runner/another vehicle on the lot? Especially with a used vehicle (maybe a 4runner they are using as a loaner), they will have a lot more wiggle room to work a deal and maybe that $2k "loss" can be accounted for by them coming down on the price of another vehicle.

IF they are to the point where they are offering a buy back, then they would probably love to work a deal with you on another vehicle. A one year old 4runner trail premium would be prettyyy niiiiceee.

Just a couple of things I've noticed but not sure how relevant they are. The Rear axle is shifted what appears to be a half an inch to an inch on my ORDCSB auto. I was heading to lunch yesterday with a friend and we were talking about this. Funny thing is with him in the truck it wasn't really doing it which makes me think it's related to the drive line angles. I wonder if the rear drive shaft angle is high on purpose so that when you load up the bed it's where it should be?

I'll let you know. I'm loading up my bed right now for a weekend trip. It's not going to be super loaded, but maybe 200lbs?

I have a sandbag from winter. I'll throw it back there for good measure.

Thanks and keep us posted. I haven't gotten around to putting more weight in the bed to see if it fixes it. I would be kinda pissed to know that it's driveline angle related since it was supposed to be fixed w/this Gen, but hoping for an answer regardless.

I had a 4Runner Trail Premium as a loaner for about a week. The interior felt dated compared to the fresh Tacoma update. The ride was shit compared to the TRD OR's. For something that costs $8k more than what I paid for a Tacoma I don't see it being worth the premium. The 4Runner had a smoother drivetrain with no weird vibrations though, so I guess there was that. It did have a ridiculous amount of hood vibration though. I guess the scoop could be making it even worse.

I still like the 4Runner, but I'll keep my Tacoma.

I picked up my truck tonight after a Toyota Field Technician looked at it.

They duplicated the issue and documented on the papers that it is a normal characteristic to vibrate and shudder while decelerating between 15-25mph AT THIS TIME and sent me on my way. Lolwut

However, face to face, they said Toyota is aware of the issue, and it has to do with my "pinion angle" and that they're working on a fix.

I don't have much faith in a fix coming anytime soon though, considering how long it took them to fix the 2nd gen issues.

Fingers crossed for a TSB, because other than this issue, this truck is pretty badass!

Call Toyota corporate and file a complaint, and give them as many issues as you can think of that you actually have . They have been very cooperative so far with me and I'm hoping they come up with a solution quickly

    Rear pinion angle.
For fun, I measured the angles of my stock truck using an inclinometer phone app.
    Tranny angle is good.
From looking at it, my pinion angle needs an additional 2.6 degrees caster to move it from 3 to 5.6 degrees. (A 2.5 degree shims should do it)

However, this is all my theory. I don't know Toyota's real spec, or how could a stock truck be off that much. Damn, just wish a TSB would come out

I want to try it, but I'm actually a chicken.

I don't even know if it would help.

It's weird, because there is a TSB for this exact problem on 2nd gen, and the issue was the front pinion bearing on the driver CV axle. Toyota's updated bearing still didn't fix the problem. ECGS came out with a bushing to eliminate the play in the CV axle, and that fixed the problem.

The 2016 still has the same loose tolerance/play in the driver side CV axle. See the video I posted.

I'm going to just install the ECGS bushing.

I don't believe it to be front pinion bearing. It could be yours though.

One day, I will remove the rear drive shaft, and drive my truck in FWD. If problem is gone, then it is definitively coming from the rear, and rules out the front.
Just a suggestion, you may want to try this test first before laying out money for ECGS bushings, which may or may not solve your problem

Edit: actually, if your shudder goes away in 4WD, you may be right

It goes away in 4WD ... this has been confirmed by others too.

Mine does not go away when in 4x4, it's there no matter what.
