& FWIW, a rocket engine would be easier, less moving parts...

Whoa, easy there big fella. No need to be defensive.

It just bothers me when I come asking for information and instead I get a one line response telling me not to do it. You weren't the only one. I'm just trying to save myself from having to spend potentially a couple grand on something maybe I could do, certainly there are people out there who have done this. If you think I shouldn't do it then tell me why. Or warn me of certain tricky areas so I can understand why I shouldn't be attempting the job. Or maybe even provide me with information about how the whole job is done so that I can decide for myself if it is a job that I can do. If you've done this before then tell me how it went for you. This isn't just for me either, there might be another guy who comes along in the future trying to decide if he should or shouldn't do the job and maybe something you say here could be helpful to him too.

Just saying, it bothers me when people are directive instead of informative.

If you ask me it aint the hardest job in the world. The 8" elocker has the advantage of the screw type bearing caps unlike the 8.4 so you dont have to fool around with shims making adjustments. There are good videos on how to do this on youtube.

Rockets engines explode without warning. Diffs grind and lock up. Huge difference.
Only one way to learn something is jump in and do it.

screw type the backlash and bcp can be set simply by screwing in or out the caps on the outside of each bearing.

you see him use a special tool in this video

did it not show up? pasting the link to a video on here automatically embeds it in the post so the actual link doesnt show up.

Not talking about how it explodes, talking about the mechanics & again, less moving parts, but if you guys think the best way is to just go for it, have at it ..

I agree about the difficulty of setting up diff gears. I'ts tough to get it right for longevity. I've been to school for it...and graduated 1st in my class. When I get my 4.88s, next month, I'm going to let ECGS do it because they do it every day and there is definitely an "art" to it.

Here was my decision point on whether to pay someone else to set up the gears or do them myself. I'm sure I COULD do the work, but it was going to require an investment in tools I probably wouldn't use again. IF I did it wrong, a new set of gears would cost more than what it would have been to have someone do it correct in the first place. In the end, I decided to go the already set up 3rd member route. I knew it would be correct and I could easily swap it out by myself. It also only requires 2 hours max to swap out a 3rd member verses who knows how long it would have taken me to get the gears correct first time doing it.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking, either that or I'm going to take the busted 3rd member to the transmission shop and have them work on it. I'm just really trying to go at it the most inexpensive way possible. If it turns out that I can't borrow enough tools to make the savings worthwhile then I'll have someone else work on it. But at the very least I now know that I definitely can take the busted third member out on my own.

Dude don't be a dick, you asked if it was a job that could be done and we answered you. Setting backlash/ preload and side clearance on a third member is a tough job. Not something you can figure out as you go like say breaks and rotors. If you just want to swap a third in already built then yeah it's easy and you can do it in a few hours.

We are all here to help each other But don't make a account a few days ago to ask for help and then get smart with me when I'm just telling you the damn truth.
