Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Probably because 4.0 should make more torque sooner, not just the 1 extra lb ft at peak.

As to being faster, manual or auto they have each been proven faster. All depends on the driver, the day and the ohase of the moon. I know my 2012 auto felt faster than my 2013 6spd but felt less powerful. Now the 2015 will shit on either one being supercharged.

Well, yeah, obviously most FI will shit on NA in the same vehicle. If someone replaced all the intake and exhaust stuff and tuned the 3rd gen more aggressively, I could see them giving a 2nd gen SC a run for its money perhaps.

Not apples to apples at all. Manuals will almost always be faster off the line because they are geared lower with a beefier rear end. The 2016 would probably win the quarter mile because it has way more power on the high end. I can tell you now my 2002 gets off the line well but it is a dog at highway speeds when it comes time to pass.

I would put my money on the 2nd gen but I haven't red lined my 2016 yet. Only has 700miles on her. Not going to be happy when I sell my 2010 I know that

I've looked all over for this answer and I can't find it....

When the trucks are going through the production line, do they batch build autos and manuals separately or do they intermix them through out the line?

The reason I'm asking, is that I am first in line for a Pro at my dealership. However, I told them I will only take a manual. Since they are likely dealing with an allocated truck and limited choices, do I have a chance of getting a manual early in the initial distribution, or am I going to have to wait until Toyota is through the initial auto-build phase before they let some manuals loose?

Side note - I can't find a manual v6 in the entire state to test drive.

I doubt therebis much to be had with intake / exhaust work on the 3.5. Without major changes its probably about as optimized as its going to get.

If im not mistaken it has dual vvti, runs both port and direct injection and also uses a modified or sinulated Atkinson cycle/otto cycle.

Nobody is going to invest the kind of research it would take to get the performance out of this that thing n/a.

MAYBE if we are lucky someone will get FI going. But likely even more limited and far between support or competition than a 2nd gen.

The struggle is real. As for batch building i can only partially answer

I know that toyota does not do special orders. They set the numbers they are building then build them, they are allocated based on demand after they are built, any "special order" is a truck that they already planned to build and were lucky enough to get the allocation for it.

I believe they build them on the same line at the same time, i saw a video tour once. But i could be wrong and they may build a months worth or whatever of each in batches.

Percentage is way low for manuals, ask the handful of us with manual PRO's it can be a task. TOYOTA Southeast didn't get a single manual PRO, and i had to travel to get mine. Best I could figure there are less than probably 10 Inferno painted 6spd manual 2015 trd pro's in DC.

I would love to see the official numbers.

3rd generation has no hope against a SC 2nd generation. I'm not that stupid haha.

In terms of tuning, with my stupid FR-S I was able to get a 20% increase from uncorking the exhaust and intake. That thing has the d4s system as well as quad variable valve timing. By modifying what injectors are used when and when the valve timing is changed there can be significant gains in power. I have seen FR-S' with 200hp wheel (160hp wheel stock) with only a free flowing exhaust and a panel filter in the intake. Even just decatting the stock manifold gave hp gains on par with an aftermarket exhaust manifold.

This being a Toyota motor and computer though, I don't believe we will get the affordable tuning options like the Subaru engines and computers have.

That is both surprising and impressive on the boobaroo

I think the atkison cycle adds complication too. I would love to think it will get attention and respond as well as the boobaroo but i am sure being a toyota it won't. Haha.

Thinking out loud...As a future owner of a 2016 MT, these later posts are helping keep the "buyer's remorse" voices away.

Earlier, the discussions were about how the 3.5 is a downgrade from the previous 4.0 (I did like my 2007). Now, what I think I'm hearing is that folks here are 'guessing' that the 3rd gen, with more hp and just 1 ft/lb of torque less, should be faster than the 2nd gen with all things equal (stock, MT, same driver, same track, same conditions). This matters to me because I drive a combined 60 miles of city+highway per day, and my experience with test driving an AT was really underwhelming.

Thanks for all your guys' input.

^ You shouldn't have buyer's remorse if you're getting a 2016 with a manual transmission anyway considering all the problems with the new trucks seem to be directly related to the automatic transmission.

Just keep in mind in order to get that extra HP and torque, the 3.5 needs to rev about 600 rpm's higher than the 4.0.

Without real numbers it is just a guess.

I believe that the 4.0 is more proven, has/had the supercharger available and provides more power in more places. It is also a simpler design. To me it is better, making the 3.5 a downgrade in more than one manner.

I also believe Toyota is slacking more and more each generation on the quality control and testing. I think its still better than other brands but hey, we all see the problems in one place or another. I love my 2nd gen and by the time its gone who knows.

I do believe that 3rd gen will continue to be a great truck, but only time will tell as far as reliability, aftermarket power etc

Anybody notice that, in the video on page 84, the 2nd gen used .01 gal less than the 3rd gen for the 100 mile loop fuel economy test? How embarrassing. Someone failed math.

No. The 4.0 auto loses to a 3rd gen manual by over a truck length to 60. After that it falls further behind. The 3rd gen auto is 2 truck lengths behind the manual to 60. This block has been in service since 2004 and acquired its direct/port injection in 2006.

This sounds a lot like the chatter when Chevrolet killed the 350 and went with the 5.3 back in 2000 or when Jeep went from the 4.0 to the Penta 3.6.

Time will tell, but I don't think Toyota made a mistake with this one. I love mine more every day.

I'm pretty sure Toyota had to drop the 4.0 because of new CARB MPG regulations, they got better numbers with the 3.5 and tested a new engine for more HP with better MPGs. Time will tell if its an engine that sticks or not. I jumped to my 2015 to get 4x4 and had a supercharger sitting on the shelf waaay before the system shut it down and all the bandwagonners went nutso for FI lol.

Im glad that you 3rd genners are happy with your trucks! No hate here, I like eveything about them except the grill and the engine :D . Hoping to see more of them on and off the roads around me!

Well the Jeeeeeep Penta 3.6 is bitch made.

And the 5.3 LS is a good engine, that was a good replacement.

So we are up to 50/50 chance haha

    Sounds like some Wikipedia shit.

I am sure it was ported and is not all new, but if it doesn't share part numbers or interchange then its not the same.

Its still in the same family as the 4.0

Now give us all the fancy doo dads and updates on the 4.0 displacement and we would have a winner.
