4.0 was ok. 3.4 was better imo and 3.5 will be even better after tranny update

    2016 for many reason.

    Better crash rating and safety.
    Stiffer frame and stronger metal.
    Quiet cab, less road noise.
    Better resale.
    Better mpg.
1 inch lift and travel, 1/2 inch more ground clearance, better ride, better approach angle.
Slightly bigger bed "1/4 inch longer and 1 inch taller".
Cab is roomier inside - 4 inch wider and front seats has 1 1/2 inch more legroom so you can scoot up a bit and person in back has little more legroom.
4x4 transfer case is stronger & lighter.
    More sophisticated traction control.
    Better interior materials.
    Pull up handbrake.
    Bedlights.
Shark fin antenna instead of stick antenna.
    Better tires than Dunflops.
    MPG indicator and MPG history.
TPMS tells you what PSI your tires are.
    Tires filled with nitrogen.
    Projector beam headlights.
    Tailgate open slowly by damper.
    Doors shuts easier.
278 horsepower and tows 6,800 lbs.
    Looks better IMO

time to let go of the 2nd gen. its a dying breed between the epic 1st gen and bad ass 3rd gen. it was a great truck but newer tacomas will have even better resale value. get the 15' if youre into dinosaurs or collectables. i remember when people said the same things about 2nd gens and they were getting shit on. curious why youre only keeping it for 2 years?

Agree with everything you wrote expect for the nitrogen fillled and and the better looks ( though subjective).

Resale on the 16s isnt a given... yet. I remember when I bought my 2003 accord, brand new design and powertrain. Tons of problems with that year and when I went to sell those problems came to fruition. Was one of the few years when Consumer reports black marked the powertrain and two other areas. Subsequently resale for that specific year took a hit. Will that happen to the 2016 Taco doubt it but worth a comment.

Honestly I was looking pretty hard at a 2012+ when I got my truck, I just couldn't get over the tacky plastic interior. 2nd gens are awesome trucks, but it hasn't changed much since 2004. I was having a really hard time finding any 2nd gens for anywhere near a reasonable price used, I was even finding some that were as much, or more, than the 2016's. It was pretty hard for me to justify spending the same kind of money on a dated previous generation. If I could have found a low mileage 2012+ for under 25k I would have bought it, but I'm not gonna pay $30k+ for one lol.

Tranny update won't do anything. An "engine update" is what the Tacoma needs. You can't "update" an engine to produce more torque.

Consult with your wife or life partner, maybe they prefer one over the other. I would take the 4.0L and real truck transmission with "lower" HP over the minivan motor and weak 4 cylinder transmission.

The 3.5 can't even tow within its own tow rating without having it grenading.

It has 1 less ft/lb of torque??? And over 30 more hp. It doesn't need an engine update. There are plenty of 3.5 making great power. The first gen was a 3.4. It needs a tranny update and barely so.

It's bc you bought an accord lol jk tacomas will always have high resale value. The reason people think it's the worst gen ever bc it's new, it's different, and it easy to jump on the bandwagon of haters. EVERY car has something that will bug someone but here on TW everyone is more vocal and sometimes it's ridiculous. I mean someone has a problem with a 16' and everyone thinks it's a disaster. It's really stupid. The motor kicks ass, and it's a nice pair for the truck. It has plenty of power and hauls ass when you get on it. The only issue I've ever had is the 6th gear is worthless to me. 16' is a great investment and IMO a great looking truck. So DRIVE IT and let us know what you think. Not what some 2nd gen nuthuggers have to say lol jk

3.4L doesn't need a tranny update. The A340 in there is used in 4.0L V6, V8s, and even the Supra turbo. Much better trans than the "new" 6-speed gear hunting POS.

My truck isn't a gear hunter. I think you have read too many threads it just hates 6th gear unless it's downhill then it loves 6th gear

I'm sure it depends on how much elevation climbed and descended during trips which determines how much the 3rd gen shifts. For those guys with 3rd Gen tacos in the mountains of the West, may God have mercy on your poor souls.
