Trailer Hitch Recovery Question

    Is it safe to recover via a shackle in a Class 3 Curt Hitch. The hitch is rated for 5000lbs does that effect the size of vehicle you can recover or just the size of trailer you can tow. Would recovery strap break first? Does hitch have to be heavier?

    I put a shackle in a hitch intended for a ball on my class 3 hitch all the time. It's plenty strong. You seem to already know not to use a ball for recovery, so +1 internets for you!

    Friend tried to jerk someone out by ball and the ball stud broke. Nylon strap acted like a rubber band and slung ball through rear window hitting GF in back of the head.

    That's bad, mmmmmkay. Hope she was ok. And the gf too. As for the hitch shackle combo.....I yanked a Suburban out of the mud several years ago using one. I would do it again. Good luck and be safe.
