I recently put a down-payment on a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 Double Cab (this is after my 2007 model was stolen out of my driveway in April). I feel like the dealership is kind of giving me the run around with the truck I want. They didn't have it on the lot so they said I could put a down-payment down of $500, which I did. They would then put in a request to the Toyota factory of the truck I wanted. Apparently there are only so many of the model that I want being produced or allocated so they gave me a time frame of 6 weeks to 3 months for it to be in my hands. We agreed on a price of $500 over invoice. They told me that I would hear from them within 72 hours in which the factory would commit to building my exact truck. Then there would be a build date set and I would get it after that. My question... is what the dealership is telling me about the factory building my specific truck true or are they just giving themselves time to find my truck at another dealer for a trade? As far as invoice prices, is there a factory invoice and a dealership invoice? I thought there was only one invoice and one MSRP but I keep seeing people mention multiple invoices on this forum along with an MSRP as well. I'm confused.

By the way, I placed my down-payment on Saturday, 5/7. Never heard from my salesman (which he told me the factory would get back to him within 72 hours with a build date), so I called today. He explained that he hasn't heard from the factory yet and that 4x4's take a bit longer to get since they don't make as many.

Any thoughts? Was thinking of using my agreed upon deal for negotiations at another dealer because I feel like I'm getting jerked around a little. It wouldn't hurt in the end.

My dealer told me they were special ordering my truck. They were actually just waiting to find a local allocation and that took 5 months. I didnt care cause they didnt ask me to put anything down and it gave me time to save more for a downpaymwnt

Go with your gut instinct. If you feel like you're getting jerked around then leave. I bought a new car last year. The one I wanted was not in stock so the dealer filled out a request form with what I wanted on the car. I put my deposit down and was told I had to wait 6 months. Two months later the car I wanted came down the assembly line and was delivered to the dealership. What Inwas told was that if the car I wanted was made the way I wanted the request would be put in for it to be delivered to that particular dealership. I hope this helped.

Yeah I'm not too worried about the down-payment. More worried about them trying to deceive me especially with the invoice price. Since it was a "factory allocated build", we didn't agree on an actual price... just $500 over invoice. But if they can't be straight with me in regards to how they get their hands on the truck, I'm not expecting them to be straight with me on the invoice price.

When I build the truck on Toyota.com, it comes to an MSRP of $35,629 including del/handling/processing fees. I'm assuming invoice will be around $2,300 below that. Is that safe to say?

And I also guess it really doesn't matter how they get it as long as it shows up. I have trust issues.

I feel for you, I called a friend who is a salesman back on March 1st and told him what I was looking for. He called me back a few days later to tell me his dealership would not be getting any of the limited models anytime soon. I told him I was contemplating waiting till the 2017s came out instead of settling for something I didn't want, and thanked him for his time. Long story short, I received a call from him in April telling me he found an allocation with a build date of 5/31 for the model/color I want. I locked it in but I'm still waiting. I hope to have it sometime in June. I'm trading in my 2013 DCSB so its not like I need it, but I tell you, the wait is killing me.

I was in a similar situation when I was looking... put down $500 with a reputable(ish) dealer and was told 4-6 weeks (was in Dec '15). Long story short, I was able to find the exact truck I wanted faster on my own by using the toyota website which searches for trucks.

I cancelled the $500 and bought the truck elsewhere and for about 1k less. I'd suggest you keep looking and expand your search area. If you can find the exact truck a few hours away, or even a bit more you may save the $$ and time waiting if you are willing to go somewhere to get it. Luckily I found mine within the local area.

    Good luck!
