Isn't 95 the 1st year for the 1st Gen Tacoma? Don't get me wrong I believe yours is a 95. It happens all the time where a manufacturer has left overs from a previous model and sell both models simultaneously as the same year.

some of this, a little of that
a buddy had an '85 in high school, that thing couldn't get out of its own way but it never had an issue other than some minor rust on the bed. I still see it putting around town.

Yes the Tacoma was a mid year release. 1995.5.
Mine was no name truck called a SR5 Pickup & the last run bought in Jan 1995.
You could get the DLX or the SR5.
This is what it looked like in 2008 - over 23 years later... I sold it to a friend

Standard cab or Xcab configuration - 5 spd manual or auto. Mine was a 5 spd loved it.
My first was a 1987 SR5 with a factory Turbo 22RTE 5 spd. Loved that truck too.

I just finished a 1000 mile round trip this week. Assuming (key word there) an average speed of 75-ish, my average MPG dropped from around 17.9 to 15.9. Driving at 60mph or so gets me 19 to 21 MPG, but anything over that speed dumps the efficiency out the window. Your description above I believe is the root cause.

Well I will add my 2 cents. In many ways I agree with the OP. The fuel efficiency per it's displacement is horrible. There is no reason for a 20 MPG average in a 3.5 displacement power plant with a 6 speed. The next thing I own a 2nd Gen 5 lug and love it's off road performance even for a 2 wheel drive it performs very well. It has great road manners as well. Compare that to a few 3rd Gen trucks I have driven and I was very underwhelmed by the overall driving experience. My 2nd Gen has a much better ride even with a lift and larger tires. Now to the major negative on Toyota for both the 2nd Gen and 3rd gen. Parts availability even basic maintenance items such as brakes are an absolute pain in the rear. The front discs are a cake walk but the configuration of the rear drums used is just obscene. My last diesel had drum brakes and were simple to change with very basic tooling. I know there are some here that believe they are just fine and in the overall performance you are correct. Many components are Toyota only which makes sourcing components an absolute pain if your in a bind. Here is the nail in the coffin for the latest engine. Poor access to even the most commonly changed maintenance items such as the oil filter and a worse location at that. A minor wreck could cost you the engine just from the filter housing or cooler leaking. This is simply unacceptable. Spark plugs require more work to change than on many modern engines and the new fuel system still lacks filtration. The overall design mechanically is my main gripe and most of which is on the new 3.5. In my opinion the TRD PRO fixes an access issue to the oil filter but still it's location is far from desirable.

Not bashing Toyota as I love my 4 banger 2nd Gen just stating some simple facts.

My current daily is a 3/4 ton Ram diesel 4x4 and bone stock yields similar fuel economy that the 3.5 does with nearly double the displacement. Toyota really needs to step up its fuel efficiency to meet the upcoming CAFE requirements.

    Rant off lol.

Biggest issue is the carbon build up. It's been known to take out the turbos. Ford has made some adjustments in the new 3.5 ecoboost. Toyota had a great idea with the self cleaning injectors.

20 mpg is bad in a 3.5 liter motor? I get 15 with my Eco boost..

Lot of guys here are getting better than that as well. Best I ever got on my f150 was 19.5

What is your gear ratio. The cold weather up there probably doesn't help either. There may be other factors too.

Almost all trucks are too big now. Most people simply do not need these huge trucks. Now wanting them, whatever floats yer boat. I know guys who need really big trucks like loggers, etc. Hauling HUGE loads of equipment that most trucks will never see. The vast majority of trucks on the road are underutilized and simply not needed IMHO. I personally think my tacoma is too big.

I completely agree , I make a road trip from seattle to slc utah about 6 times a year approx 1900 miles round trip.
in my 2012 tacoma 4.0 6 speed i averaged 19.5 mpg going 80mph on average and was able to stay in 6th gear the entire trip.
That being said I did the exact same trip in my '16 double cab limited with the garbage 3.5 motor and automatic I averaged 16.5 mpg at the same 80mph average . the 3.5 auto combo was constantly trying to find a gear when it wasn't stuck in 4th at 4000 rpm .
the 3.5 would be an awesome engine in something lightweight like a scion fr-s but it sucks in a truck since it has no low end torque

I'm glad I have a manual transmission in my 2008. I had an automatic 2012 Taco for a week, and test drove a 2012 4Runner. Unless you mash the gas pedal, there's no power. Also, even with a lift and 33's, I can still manage 19 mpgs.

That's pretty much how I was driving that 2012 Taco for the week I had it. Still, not the same as a manual. The 4Runner at least had the tapshift option, but was still rather unresponsive for casual driving.
