This is an EXCELLENT thread. Thanks all for the entertainment! I'll chime in; I've owned 7-8 Tacomas (I loose count sometimes) and all have been die hard machines. I have had my problems but nothing that couldn't be managed on my own or with the helpful support of the company. Point and case, it's solid and so is the corporation. I have put near 400k on one and that one in particular was maybe the most hassle free taco yet albeit it was a 4cyl 1st gen which arguably may be the most reliable taco ever made. I plan on getting all "Jay Leno" someday and owning one of each gen and engine option. I am a loyalist through and through with everything I do. I have only owned one non Toyota (Subaru) and that was because of convenience, not choice so much. I will never own anything else. I will say though that so far I'm no fan of the 16 but that may change.

The old 4.0L 1GR and bullet proof 5 speed auto was a pretty robust combo for a lot of years. Toyota needed to change with the times but that doesn't make it better. And im sure they would have sold just as many 3rd gens, maybe MORE? with the old 4.0L and 5 speed auto.

Me personally I would have rather had the old 4.0L Gen 2 Engine/Trans in the 3rd Gen as well.

Lots of videos are coming out on the new Honda ridgeline its another 3.5L V6 engine.... I wonder how the transmission is in it compared to this new 3rd gen Taco.

The dual vvti 1GR plus a little tuning and the 6-speed A760 behind that would be a great combo.

The so called 3rd gen was rushed into production, we can clearly see that now. Toyota will have to scrap this erratic shifting and overheating POS transmission.

Owners should be at the Toyota lots with pitchforks, enough complaints and your truck may get a real truck transmission for free.

I wonder if the transmission was designed to be used for a bigger engine?

I had 2 GM cars with the 3.4L V6, one with the 4spd 4T60 auto, and one with the 4T65 auto. Both shifted fine. One day I was driving someone's car with the 3.1L V6, which has the 4T65 tranny. That car never seemed to be happy with what gear it was in. :notsure:

I'm in contact with the dealership and corporate about my options for unloading this. I just went on a long trip and my back is killing me now (never, ever had back problems before).

There are just so many things wrong. Any one of which I might have been able to ignore. Hell, I was planning on waiting out 3-4 of them until the tsbs roll in, but I don't think I can stomach a truck that has all those issues AND causes me physical pain.

So incredibly disappointed. It's weird. I love the truck but I also hate it. I can't drive it without constantly thinking about the stuff that's wrong with it. (Mostly because I'm reminded at almost every speed range with a different issue)

Lol I feel exactly the same way , I actually had to re read your post because it was worded just how I feel about this pile of crap truck I paid $42,000 for

I'm working with Toyota corporate as well and asked them to buy mine back too.
The letter they sent me in the mail said it will be resolved in 30 days

Any tips on how to get them to offer a buy-back? How many times did you bring your truck in (was there a dumb minimum # of service attempts?)?

They offered me an 8 year 125k warranty, but I dont think i can take it for that long. I'm spending too many brain-cycles stressing out about this stupid truck. I'd rather just swap it out for a 4runner or something else (no other viable light duty truck candidates).

edit: I have ~5K miles on it atm.

They haven't offered me anything yet , however I have told them several times that they need to buy it back .
Mine has been to the dealership at least 3 times and is currently there .
I already have a deposit down on a trd pro 4Runner and cooperate knows this, Just waiting for Toyota to do something

well I sold my 16 Tacoma sport crew 4x4 outright after 2 months but not due to any issues with trans or anything. I loved it but the seat after a short period not being adjustable and I could not get comfortable and I drive at least 700 miles a week up to 900 a week. I commute 40 miles each way to work and back and then rest is running around on weekend and during the week. So I am in it a lot. Came from a 15 Tundra crew that was very comfy but would not fit in garage and I did not need that big truck either way for wife and I. I only tow a bass boat that is less than 4500 pounds. I really didn't want another SUV wife has a 14 vw Diesel Tourareg that we got Dec of 14. Plus I didn't trade in the 04 Lexus GX 460 and we still have it with 94k miles on it and it is still great. kept as a third vehicle for when I am trading or buying etc. I trade or buy mine about every 24 months at 60k miles. I went with the diesel Colorado crew 4x4 and have now had it 6 weeks and 4150 miles. Seats are a little hard but being able to adjust them made all the difference in comfort for us. Not perfect or near as nice as the Tundra I had or the Ram 1500 crew I had before the Tundra but after having the Tacoma those 2 months I fell in love with parking in garage and just the size of truck parking and driving on the streets especially so many narrow 4 lane city streets. Plus not near as crowded feeling on hyw in my opinion. I too paid $37800 for my Tacoma Sport I had and sold it outright for $33k. So I took a $4800 hit. Life goes and things happen. Life is too short. If not for the seat id still have my Tacoma I loved it but so be it. love my new diesel Colorado so far but I am a huge Toyota fan and always have been but we will see what they do with the Tacoma by 2018. Hopefully diesel engine and 10 way power seats. Hope Chevy also does 10 way seats and make them not so dang hard and firm. Plus both brands can make them little bigger seats for comfort and leg support also. If this truck I got now doesn't pan out for me ill end up probably in an SUV midsize too but hope not because I don't want full size truck after driving these smaller ones. My father in law has a 15 Grand Cherokee Laredo loaded too and loves it. I am averaging 29 mpg on my Colorado and I was getting 21 on my Tacoma. Good luck with the new jeep they are nice.

this is why I had to sell mine after 2 months. Actually after 1 month I put it for sell. I am in my truck 700 to 900 miles a week. I bought mine in December and new owner picked it up End of Jan. Lost 5k on it but that is life. All vehicles fit some different. I think it is mainly the not being able to adjust enough and the angle of the seats in them also. Just my opinion. I now have a 16 diesel Colorado that has hard seats but I added Katskins and that helped but with the adjustable seats I am ok in it. Shame they also don't offer 10 way but they do go up and down also. Love my new truck and loved my Tacoma except like you killed me and hated it for that and had to sell. Im in it too much. I will trade my new one in when the 18s come out and ill have about 60k on my Chevy come December of 2018 and ill see what Toyota comes up with. Hopefully a diesel with adjustable seats that are comfy. Don't get me wrong Colorado seats are hard but if you put Katskin leather for $900 upcharge it makes a big difference and seats are ok. Still need to be little bigger but good. I get 29 mpg with it also so far after 4150 miles. I regularly get 31 to 32 to and from work.

Toyota doesn't buy back vehicles because your unhappy. Even if it has been in the shop several times for various issues. Unless it's falls under your states lemon law or has a serious issue that can't be fixed or the manufacturer wants to have its engineers personally look at. This is the only way. I work for the largest auto group in NY and I can say over the years I've only seen or heard of about 5-6 cases.

If I buy a pair of jeans that look good without trying them on knowing they are my size and I get home and they are tight in the thighs, or not enough room in the groin, and I still wear them a few times. I just suck it up and deal with it or give them away. I'm not gonna sit and bash the company when in to blame for majority of the issues. I'm not saying Toyota should be excused for some of the issues they have had. However I feel a lot of you guys are just bitching because your the ones at fault for impulse buying. Instead of taking the time to do your research, take the truck on an extended test drive, or overnight. You pulled up to the dealership, looked at it and said, it looks good I have to have it. Also I feel like some of the people here have nothing better to do than to bitch. If you absolutely hate the truck, suck up the loss and trade it in or even better, sell it privately

I agree. I bought one in Dec and didn't take it for long enough test drive to realize this truck hurt my back. I also went on I like Toyota. I still do and I did sell mine outright the following month and took the hit. I agree that it was something I chose. Now I didn't have any other issue with mine at all. Maybe it would have but I didn't. Loved the truck otherwise. Life is too short and sometimes we just buy something that doesn't work for whatever reason to the person. If it is mechanical and cannot be fixed that is different but that goes on lemon law where you live and rules. Sorry many are having issues mechanically with the way this truck is and unless its major best bet is trade it or sell it and don't look back and go forward and get something that works. I learned a lesson and that is if a dealer will not let me keep it for at least a full day of running around or over a weekend I am not buying again no matter the brand. We are all different and fit different in our comfort.
