Here's a good one I had a viper keywhy. s entry installed in my SR Tacoma mostly because I want to be able to unlock the passenger side door without going around to drivers side and unlock it. More for work. Plus if I take the SR out with my wife witch is rair we usually take the TRD but if we are going to pick up something for a project we are working on we take the SR. Well I am the few that still thinks it's important to open the passenger side door first so that was the biggest reason I did it. But l was working yesterday and locked the truck with the remote and then shut the door and meanwhile I was grabin something else out of the truck and laid keys on front seat. And then shut the door with keys on front seat. Oops!! I thought no big deal I had a second remote hidden just in case this happens. Boy I was wrong it would not unlock the truck lights flashed like it was. So I thought the remote went bad. So I got a price of 10 gauge found wire out of the back of my truck and stuck it down in the door jam and pushed on the remote on front seat still would not work. I am like what the f is going on I never had a problem. I ended up having to wait an hour and half for road side assistance to unlock my truck. So there is something the system is doing and I don't know why but I am going back to the shop that put it in on Friday and see what is up. So I had a extra key made without the chip to unlock the truck. This is a weird problem.

Could be an issue with the unit, however it's highly unlikely to me. I've been installing these things for 11 years. Seems like they just tapped into your door lock and unlock wires. However the computer is probably shutting the switch down after its locked with the door skin or OEM remote if it had factory keyless. This renders the door switch inop which is probably where they tied into to lock and unlock the doors. I haven't done any work on a new Tacoma yet, but I've check out listings and it shows some notes about a window jam protection. Not sure if the wire colors are just different or if it's a complete different circuit you need to tie into to. Usually vehicles that the door switch goes to sleep have a unlock detection (actuator) wire you need to pulse in order to unlock the doors. Or you can pulse the ignition with unlock to wake the computer back up. They might simply be able to tie into the factory arm/disarm wires, which they should anyway if it has a factory alarm. Without having the vehicle in front of me or seeing what and how they tied into the vehicle I can't really tell you. It could be a few different things, and there could be a few different solutions. If there isn't any defective equipment which I doubt, the shop did a poor job installing it or they just don't have any idea what they are doing. Take it back and explain the problem and have them fix it.

To test to see if the door switch does to sleep do this: roll the drivers window down. Press lock on the door switch with the door open. Once it locks shit the door. Wait 30 seconds to a minute. Then reach in and try to press unlock on the door switch. If it unlocks it's not shutting down, if it doesn't then the computer goes to sleep. Some vehicles it takes 30 min or so for the vehicles to fully shit down everything. So if it's unlocking and your still curious try it again and leave it sit for a long time just to see. Toyotas usually aren't like that but perhaps they made some changes.

    Hope this helps

    I caught that too, lol.

This issue is kind of why I stayed away from installing Keyless entry. Although, I felt like a dick when I didn't open the door for my 9 month pregnant wife, I almost stopped taking her out in it cause I felt like a douche everywhere we went.

Edit: If I would of know my truck didn't have keyless entry, I think it would have been a deal breaker just in spite, I mean it has a back up camera but not keyless entry? Even the sales person was shocked, and went back inside to look for the remote, lol!

I am confused, can't you just twist the key for "unlock" in the driver's door hole twice and it will unlock all doors? Once for driver, twice for all?

Edit: I mean while stock, without your viper.

    Nice implied dig. Well played.

I didn't realize there was no passenger key slot. Oops. I will shut up and get off your lawn now.

And go back to my own lawn, because I am closer to 40 than I want to be.

Took truck back to stereo shop and they fixed the problem. Tech had to put an extra ground wire in so the stock system would not affect it. At least what he told me. And he was not happy about doing it he said it was not his fault it did what it did. But the owner gave me a credit on anything I wanted in future. It was the first one they did so it was a learning experience for them.

Maybe it's worth paying extra for SR5. You get keyless entry, alarm, intermittent wipers, cruise control, touchscreen radio, tinted rear window with sliding glass and other goodies or at least get the convenience package "$800-$1,000"

What alarm? I believe Toyota sells those as an accessory.

The system is in all the Tacoma's already they just charge you an arm and leg for the remote keys and programing in the way of around $400 for only one key/remote. Keys are $180 for one. That's an about price I said forget it when it was 180 for one key.

Mine came with a alarm in the SR5 because if it stormed and rained hard enough. My alarm went off and that's when I was like...Ohh cool I got an alarm.

Always a good idea to have an extra un-chipped key made just for opening the doors. Toyota use to supply a 3rd gray valet key but stopped and now only gave 2.

Had one made last week during the 6 month check up. I leave my truck running when I go into the convenience store. Beats carrying around the 2 big fob keys.

Hmmm... Double the price. 1st gen un-chipped keys are $6 each.

He quoted me $35 and I told him to cut it. When they were through checking out my truck the lady called me and said my truck was ready. She said $11.00+ change was what I owed so I never argued with her. Paid and beat feet.

I would have paid the $35.
