Just dropped it off at my friend's shop

Timing belt and water pump kit being installed.
New radiator and hoses being installed
Any bearings/pulleys that need replacing will be installed.

This weekend I'm also going to clean the intake and change the spark plugs.

Oh yours was a bit worse than mine is. This is what mine looks like.



It doesn't go all the way through the bed and the actual hole isn't very large. That's why I was only thinking of cleaning it up and then just using Bondo or some other epoxy. Well. That and I don't have a welder nor the knowledge of how to use one. But your approach is definitely the way to go. Far more thorough than what I was planning on doing.

Do you normally have a bed mat or drop in liner on it? If so fiberglass isn't a bad temporary solution till you can fix it right. Just make sure you clean up/ remove the rust as much as possible, treat, and prime before you epoxy.

By no means do I recommend this if you have the means to cut out and weld, but it has worked for me so far. Did my first repair like this over my wheel well 2 years ago, and that one's still holding strong. This one was for a new spot the formed closer to the front of the bed.
