so what would a offset of 0 and a backspace of 4.5 mean exactly? Wanting to try and fit 255/80/17 tires on my 2016 trd offroad with a 2inch OME lift.

 

Just out of curiosity, what is the point of this? Looks only? It seems like it would just make your truck dirtier.

No; the offset. Making your tires stick out further to the sides.

 

I think some people like the stance that it gives the truck. The reason why it matters to me is so see if it will help/hurt the chances of these tall skinny tires rubbing or not.

 

Yes. Be sure the tire shop installs a fit kit (basically wear items like O-rings and valve stem) to prevent leaks. This is true whenever sensors are mounted and unmounted.

 

That makes sense; didn't think about rubbing issues with non-stock sized tires.

 

I just installed 265/70/17 with TRD wheels on a 2016 TRD Sport and had the dealership do it. Asked them and a bunch of people on TW. Should not rub.

255/80-17 tires should fit with no rubbing with stock wheels. With 0 offset (or 4mm offset TRD Pro wheels), rubbing will probably occur when steering, because the tire is now swinging over a 30mm larger radius.

 

So what offset should I shoot for in a wheel? What's the stock offset?

 

^If you want to avoid rubbing, go with stock offset, which is around +30mm.

 

What about the backspacing?

 

I tried to find the same info and came up empty. The most important thing to remember is that its not just offset, you have to take into account the wheel width too. For a 9" wide wheel, I decided to go with a +12mm offset. That put the inner side of the rim in almost the exact same backspace as the stock TRD sport wheel (either 7" or 7.5" wide wheel, can't remember off the top of my head, with +30mm offset). The outside edge sits about 1.5" further out. Everyone prefers a different look, I wanted to make sure my backspacing was sufficient to avoid rubbing and my outside edge was a little wider but not sticking way out from the fender. +12mm on a 9" wide rim was perfect for me. If you look at my other posts you can find a picture of my truck with the new wheels. I'd post another but I'm on my work computer and for some reason it won't let me upload an image from here. I'm now running 265/70/17 BFG KO2's with no rubbing. I decided to go with this tire size because it was the largest I could get that were still C rated, meaning lighter and softer ride for road use.

 

Did you put any lift on? The Cooper AT3 has a 275/70/17 in a C load.

 

No lift, I decided I actually like the ride height on the Off Road. I didn't look at the Coopers, that's good to know. I went with the largest size I knew I could run stock height on in the KO2s.

 

Since you plan to run a narrower-than-stock 255mm tire, backspacing isn't as important. Just pick a 7.5-8.0" wide wheel with +30mm offset.

 

I understand that a more negative offset from +30 would move the outside edge of the wheel out a distance equal to wthe difference from +30. However, isn't this based on a 265 width tire? Say for instance I install the TRD Pro rims on a 245 width tire, the edge of the wheel would not sit at the edge of the fender wheel edge, but further inside. Is this correct? Thx.
